My Mac just about gets past the 10.8 gatekeeper (see what I did there?).
I totally bypassed 10.7 and I really like the idea of iMessage on the desktop, so I'll be getting it IF it doesn't require me to have 10.7 already.

VirtualBox - Causes a kernel panic when you try to run a VM!

1) pretty much all the VM systems break on pretty much every new version of Mac OS. When you're doing such low level stuff, it's not exactly a surprise
2) it's a developer preview for pity's sake.

1) I've not noticed it do that before.
2) I know, correction made in red.

I don't use VirtualBox much but both VMware Fusion and Parallels are pretty much guaranteed to fail with every new version of OS X. Did on 10.6 and 10.7 at least (don't think they were really around much before then since they need intel hardware to work). They usually patch them within a few days, but that kind of thing not working really doesn't surprise me at all. I'd assume VM systems would initially fail even with 'final' ML.

I suspect you will officially have to have Lion installed to get ML as it's all done through the App Store. The question I suppose is wether or not the App Store in Snow Leopard will allow ML to be downloaded and installed without Lion being the underlying OS.

No way of knowing until it goes live. Given the app store download for Lion was basically a disk image with an app wrapped round it to deal with the install, there's no reason they couldn't write the ML installer to run under SL too. Apple did very much sell SL as 'an upgrade to Leopard' rather than being a new OS version, so that may have had something to do with the requirement. They haven't done that with ML, but it's launch has been very much more low key than SL's was.

As I say, we'll find out when it hits.

It hasn’t been launched, it’s been previewed.

Fair enough. However the equivalent for Sl was a big press conference (IIRC), whereas this one seems little more than a press release and a few select journos having had a peek under NDA.

Jon

For SL they had a preview at the iOS 4 launch (IIRC).

They then had a dedicated keynote for the actual launch where they announced prices, dates, etc...

I read one commentator suggesting that that could have been more because they've already got a few big shiny-stuff-being-demoed-on-a-stage releases lined up for the coming year, and they don't want to overdo it and make the big money earners appear less exciting

Personally I find it rather telling that an OS X preview is not a ‘big shiny-stuff-being-demoed-on-a-stage’ event anymore

Very sad :(

Yeah. I guess that's yet another negative to spin out of the seemingly inevitable move to annual OS releases. I'd rather take a big release every other year on the grounds of consistency alone!

I've been using Mountain Lion since it was released to devs and I'm really liking it. It's certainly not stable and polished enough for demanding users, but if you acknowledge the the fact it's in beta and are happy with that then it's fantastic. I find myself at home missing many of the new features they've added.

Really looking forward to the final release.
