We've just had to move desks at work to fit a new desk in.

We've gone from 3 (two back to back and one on the end).

To 4 in a catherine wheel style.

The position of where I am sitting now has moved about 2 feet from where I was previously. However all the desks have been swapped around. I had been sitting at my desk for 3 years and it was set up exactly how I wanted it. The monitor arms were in the right possition, the drawers were set up with all my stuff in it (drawers are attched to the desk forming part of the legs). etc...

I now have an older desk with an older set of drawers that doesn't have the same layout. I've had to set up the monitor arms to match me from how they were set up (for someone else).

It's f*cking ridiculous! None of the three of us are sat at the same desks we were previously at. For the other two it doesn't bother them as they've only been in the office less than a year (just a couple of weeks for one guy).

I now feel like I'm living in someone else's space. Not nice at all.

Also, the drawers are broken on this desk, they don't shut properly whereas my previous drawers hadf a quiet shut thing that would pull the drawer shut if you just pushed it lightly.

Also, the drawers don't have the same layout inside. I had a compartment for all my stuff and now nothing fits into my new drawers. What is the f*cking point?

I feel your pain! I'm a creature of habit and a tad OCD, my desk has to have everything at right angles to other items or it just feels wrong and bugs me all day! I know, it's laughable to people who don't suffer from this infliction, but it's a real problem and I find myself less productive as a result of thing being out of kilter.

Our cleaner at work routinely moves things about when she dusts on an evening and most days I come in and find my wireless mouse flung over onto another desk and the monitors at strange angles - I go ape!!

I can see the funny side, but it really does bother me.

Surely this thread should be in the Ranting & Venting thread? :?

Consider yourself lucky; I've spent the last two years working in a hot-desking environment; only got my own desk as of Tuesday due to a change in roles.

Your problems and Queen's money, that's what I want!

I don't mean to be offensive but you either have huge problems in your other aspects of your life or you need to see a psychologist. And I am not being funny here...

While I'd agree that we all have "bigger" problems in our lives, when you consider the fact that most people spend 8 hours a day chained to a desk, it does make life easier when it's all set out "just right"

I'd hate to move desks now, after seven months I think everything is about right. 5 monitors, 2 speakers, 8 different types of tea, a foot rest thingy, 2 computers and 3 operating systems later!

+1, I have to change desk every day due to the department's hot-desking policy.

I agree with you, but...

I could have some sympathy for him if he had a genuine issue but he doesn't. All he said was that his desk is not set up right just yet but that's not exactly hard to do. And drawers not having the same layout?! Give me a break! If he can't deal with that that I wonder what kind of job he has that he's kept it for three years. Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, he had to have pancakes on a certain day of the week and if he hadn't he couldn't cope with that. But he was autistic...

I tried my best to not to be offensive but now he is blocking me I don't really have to try anymore as he won't see it anyway.

First world problems ;)

I've had both situations recently - I used to hot desk and now I have a permanent desk. Either way though I don't care. Sure it's nice to set your chair the way you want it, etc but it wouldn't cause me a breakdown if someone gave me some crappy drawers. Each to their own though.

Hot desking when there aren't really enough desks - its good encouragement not to arrive late!

I preferred having my own desk as with the hot desks some people tend to set up a residency without any reason and then give you evils when they roll in at 9:15 and wonder why someone is in their usual spot!

I couldn't imagine working in a hot-desking environment.

Although, I've never experienced it or even seen it in action so I wouldn't really know what to expect.

Even at school I remember we had our own specified desk for each class (IIRC).

Where I work now though I don't think it would even be possible to hot desk as each of the people in the office has a fairly different role and so a different set of software installed etc...

We also don't have roaming profiles set up so that would be a bit of a pain too.
