When I worked in Sun it was set up for hot-desking, what with each desk being fitted with a Sun Ray thin client, just pop your card in and carry on where you were, you even had your own phone number and logged in/out each day. However each desk had a number and employees were generally registered to a desk for ease (so goods in could deliver parcels, etc). Most people seemed to have their own desk, though you'd occasionally find someone in your seat if you'd been away and they'd popped up for some help with something.

When I was working in a previous surgery, I would have to "hot desk". Essentially, I nabbed whichever room was vacant for that session. It meant I could be in ten different rooms during the course of the week. I basically lived out of my bag (which had all of my equipment) and my plastic box that kept letters and referrals and was kept along with other boxes in the receptionist's area.
Yes it was a PITA but by no means was it hardship. My current workplace has allocated a dedicated room to me so I have everything set up but still occasionally I have to find things if I'm in another room.
