There are more atoms in a DNA double helix than there are stars in a standard galaxy. I'm quite pleased that i watched an episode of Cosmos by Carl Sagan and knew which bits he would be updating at the end, it's interesting to spot the gaps in knowledge that they had back when it was originally filmed - and now that information is available on Wikipedia for free to anyone

I bought my Mum a copy of Wikipedia in the form of a Kindle 3g. Cheaper than a copy of Britannica that's already out of date before it lands on your door mat... Here's hoping it works in her particularly backwards corner of not notoriously forwards France

Brought some Fire Foods Chilli Nuts into work today. The chilli extract is supposed to be rated at 1m SHU. It's fair to say much hilarity ensued!

On a random [LIFTED] theme, I read the other day that the encyclopaedia Britannia is now defunct.

Not really. The 'shelf full of paper' is defunct, the institution remains, as does it's web site. Which is a bit like wikipedia if somebody actually bothered to fact check it. Jon

Well that's what I meant really, the big papery thing on the shelf in the library.

My employer has forbidden me from attending an anti-monarchy protest. Boo.

Are they also going to ban people from attending Jubilee parties?

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Not knowing who your employer is, of course, but are they even allowed to do that? Isn't this still a free country?

Have you been specifically banned from attending the protest, or just not had the day off authorised?

It is a free country, in that he can attend the protest if he wants. The company is then also free to not employ him, on the basis that he has publicly displayed behaviour with which they do not wish to be associated.
