Duchess Kate is gonna need a few more public speaking lessons... And that she sounds a lot more posh to me than she did before

BMWs. Specifically 3-series. Maybe even an M3.
I doubt I'm gonna have enough for a house deposit for a few years now I've given around £4k to my sister for her wedding. Hence if I sell the Golf GTI (aiming for around £13k) and add it to the savings, I should be able to buy a nice M3 for £30k or so.
The concern I have is the running costs.

Insurance, I'd imagine, would be something fearsome. You get the feeling M3's attract the more.. care free driver.
Mind you 'doctor', IIRC, is a very good profession to put on an insurance form. If only I'd finished that Phd.

Hmmm I think it's actually pretty pricey to put down 'Dr' as they'll think 'Long hours, possibly responding to an emergency.' That is, tired and drives quickly. I know my sister had 9 points at one stage from speed related offences.

I've just moneysupermarket to check out some quotes. If I buy an M3, insurance is £2000+. If I move to where I work, it drops down to £1200. If I wait a year (until over 30) then it's £700.

I don't think they go on hunches like that somehow . They go on hard stats about how being a member of a particular profession affects the likelihood of you making a claim over a given year of insurance. I was informed that "Doctor' (or IIRC it may have been more specific, possibly 'GP') is the second lowest risk profession in terms of affecting the likelihood of you making a claim. Therefore, low premiums. God knows what the lowest is. You could make some obvious guesses, but 'claims' can include having your car stolen or broken into as much as a crash, so it's not just people who you think might drive like nutters. Jon

Yeah, registered address is a real killer sometimes. It's actually quite unfair too - for most people, their car spends at least much time elsewhere as it does sat outside their house anyway. Jon

In all honesty, I'm not surprised at the quotes. The area I live in is pretty rough and there's no way a BMW could sit outside without being defaced/stolen for one night, especially an M3.
I plan to move and rent for a while whilst I allow the deposit to build up.

Just six weeks ago it was -18C, I was standing on ice on the lake and swimming in the 1C water. Today it was 15C in glorious sunshine and the water temp was 7C.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Toenails - do they really need to be bullet-proof and razor-sharp as I get older?

Whether the fog is going to stay away long enough for me to actually get off the rig today.
