Oh that's not going to be a problem, he doesn't mind me having a life away from work, it's actually quite a nice gesture because he's been worried about me using my personal phone while he's travelling (which he has been and will be doing a lot of) he knows I won't be on-call 24 hours a day!

Specifically forbidden. They are, sadly. My employer is, ironically, the Crown.

So you're upset that your employer won't give you the day off to protest about your employer? How odd.

What's odd about it? Just because the UK taxpayer pays my salary, doesn't mean I have to like our system of government

I was being a little sarcastic. When we had the strikes about the public sector worker things a few months back, we weren't given the day off. Your employer is absolutely within their rights not to approve your day off so you can say 'boo' about them. Of course, you're quite entitled to use a sick day, book a holiday or come to some arrangement in order not to be in work that day. Or just don't turn up. Your choice. But it can't be that surprising that your employer won't give you the day so you can protest about the selfsame employer? No?

You mis-understand, I wasn't asking for the day off as in "I'm not coming in", I would have used annual leave for that, what they have done is said that I am forbidden from attending. Should I attend anyway, even on my own time and in my capacity as a private citizen, I could be subject to disciplinary procedures.

Does anyone remember: "Nanny Annie F**king F*nny Condom 64"?
We were 9-10 at the time and found it hilarious.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.
