Dear Bratty,
Thank you for saving us from yet another terrible episode of Time Team. May you dig up a bomb which detonates and destroys the entire site. (preferably after you fled)
What is the point in historic architecture if you never dig it up..... finders keepers and all.

Thing is, if you are doing archaeology properly, you just don’t “dig it up”. You need to accurately record where it is, what the context it was found in. Was it beneath something or above it? What did you dig through to get to it? Even the colour of the soil it was in is important.

What you've found there is a drawing pin from the set of The Borrowers. That is all --- I am here: http://tapatalk.com/map.php?p3ulyu

For anything of a modern history I would say just to dig it up, with the landowners consent of course. Anything which looks pre-industrial I would (probably) bring to the attention of someone who cares.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Really.. you honestly care whether the victorians used tupperware or tin? Waste of time and cash digging up old ruins that have no value to modern society. (I am sure someone will find some obscure point contrary to this - however it stands.)

No value to modern society? I disagree, clearly, but each to their own.

You know that Stonehenge thingy? Pile of big stones? I'm told Merlin put it there to pi55 off the Romans. He transported the stones through the air. It's full of ghosts and demons, so no-one goes there.
That was the pertaining view until about 150 years ago. Archaeology has told us more about what it was really for.

Line 1: Sounds interesting. Line 2: zzzzz. Sounded much more interesting when Merlin was involved . Obviously ... Anyhow.. back to digging up those prehistoric rocks in the garden, they will look nice in a rockery
