Flicking through the news, I read through this article (briefly): http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-s ... s-17807530When I got to this bit: "Ms Wardrop is herself a graduate, with a first-class honours degree, who has yet to secure full-time work since graduating three years ago", I wondered why it didn't mention what the degree was in....so I did a little more digging and found out....SPANISH. Enough said.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

There are a lot of places that want professional translators, pay is pretty good but I guess the work isn't that consistent As far as degrees go... I wanted a first but still had no issues getting graduate employment in the sector my degree was in.. it seems more about doing the extra to get yourself noticed as a degree is just another qualification most people have these days

You can't just get a qualification and expect a job, your quals and experience need to be relevant. A friend deliberately didn't get a first so he could appear to have social skills.

I got a job first and used that as the basis for doing a part-time degree. I would have got a first if it weren't for my pathalogical hatred of all things Organic Chemistry! I worked for the same company for 9 years and graduated with 7 years experience in the industry

Obvious question - has she thought about getting a job in Spain?

South America may be a better option, what with the unemployment in Spain.

If she has a first in Spanish, she should be able to make do in Portuguese.

Italian is probably more similar to Spanish, and even then you'd be lucky to pick up maybe one word in five.

I have a 2:1 degree and have a job. I was willing to do almost anything to pay the bills, and was happy to move if the conditions were right. I still think that getting the job I did was pure luck, but since then I've had numerous job offers, so it's not like there aren't jobs out there...
