due to not giving a f**k about pcs and components for years now, used to be semi "pc savvy" but now its as though im a "newcomer" to pcs again  I still have winxp with 2GB of ram and having trouble with a few games due to lack of ram, not sure if anyone knows what ram I should get to completly replace the ram I already have, as I think mismatched ram is bad? and also xp has a limit on ram, 4 gig was it?? forgot everything :x Ive also forgot what the good and bad ram is etc etc, corsair rings a bell though :x

thx :x

I think the limit was 3Gb based on a 32bit XP OS. Just find yourself 2x2Gb RAM secondhand, it should be cheap and work correctly. You'll just need to make sure you get the correct speed. Have a look at the RAM you have and get something of the same speed or faster.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

The limit is 4GB, but you loose up to 1GB depending on the hardware you have. Mine ran at 3.2GB because the graphics card ate a lot of the memory space.

I was under the impression that XP mapped out all the RAM on the graphics card so if you had a 1GB card you lost 1GB and so on.

It's a bit more complicated than that. The video ram isn't always mapped 1:1 so if you had a 2GB card you wouldn't loose 2GB!

other things with separate memory or memory-mapped IO will also have an effect. graphics cards are obviously the biggest hog though :P

Bratty, what is the spec of the rest of the computer? no point in replacing the whole thing if the CPU/GPU are good enough :)

Download and run CPUz

This will give you all the info on your system and then if needed we can help you with what to get

JJ's right, it's usually 3.2gig.

I don't think the RAM is the problem in your case. It's certainly not helping, but that's a reasonable spec. What games are you struggling with? Also what budget do you have for upgrade/replacement?

Alternatively, use Crucial's scanner: http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/
