(Actually, I could say that my parents' Micra goes to a local indie specialist, the Zafira goes to a main dealer, but we sent the previous one to an indie specialist for some jobs like getting the zircon fixed, and other odds and ends once it started being MOT'd)

Local independent - "Track, Road and Race" in Northampton if you're interested.
Fabulous bloke he is.

I use two mechanics locally. They just left the place they were at, and set up by themselves. They also build rally cars, so I tend to think their engineering know how is pretty decent of people are trusting them to that degree. I'll change the oil myself, but that's about it - lack of tools and a knowledge of my own practical limits when it comes to the hand on stuff means I'd rather pay someone to do it properly. The last thing they did was sort out a small require from the indicator relay to the lights, correct some dodgy wiring that a previous owner had lashed up, remove my dash and source a decent earth, all for £120, inc. parts & labour. They're currently repairing my radiator and fitting an automatic transmission cooler, changing the ATF and filter.

Rusty, you're very close to quite a lot of tuners - they're all in the Milton Keynes/Northampton area. Am very jealous.

You're keen to make me explode with jealousy aren't you?
Quite a lot of the VAG-specialist tuners eg APR, REVO, as well as various race tuning companies are based there.

Don't own a car but my brother gets his done at a local independent. He mistakenly used QuickFit a couple of times and I'm fairly sure they did more damage than repairs. Never, ever trust QuickFit to do anything other than change a tire.

I said independent garage, but in reality its an independent mechanic who looks after most of the cars in the village.

I use an independent alfa specialist for my Alfa. Apart from being horrendously expensive, most of the Alfa dealers don't know their arses from their elbows and most of the decent technicians have left and started their own garages.
For my freelander I just use a mate who's got a garage.
BTW you do all know you don't have to use a main dealer to keep your warranty don't you?

Interesting as I have a Fiat but had to get it from dealer in Nuneaton as one's around Northampton didn't seem that interested. To be fair the dealer in Nuneaton has been excellent so I always take my car back there for servicing. Be a shame to leave them next year when I get my new car (probably).

+1 My girlfriend's car isn't and her brother looks after it.

As I said, you are aware that there is no requirement to use a main dealer to maintain your warranty?

I'm aware of that but I don't have a car.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.
