I probably wouldn't consider myself a "trekkie" as such. I have watched and enjoyed all of the series', except DS9, and I've really liked all of the films. We watched Star Trek last weekend and both really enjoyed it, I didn't expect it to be exactly true to the original series and honestly can't say I spotted (or paid any attention to) inconsistencies, we both just went along without any pre-conceptions and enjoyed the film for what it was. My Mister did suggest a few things that probably had the real die-hards twitching, but they certainly didn't detract from the excellence of the movie for us.

Just came back from watching it today...

I felt that for a general Sci-Fi film or for those new to Star Trek i would probably rate it a 8 or a 9 just because i did like the whole clean look and special effects etc. of it although i do agree that the Spock/Uhura thing was a bit... rushed ?

However as a Star Trek film i think i would probably lower it to about a 7-8 just because i personally kept spotting what i thought were inconsistencies with the general "universe". I mean i know they explained things with Kelvin got destroyed therefore Alternate Universe but there are some things i felt were just not right ¬.¬

Anyhow, overall i liked it and will hopefully get it on blu-ray when released.

It's an alternate timeline, surely be definition there can't be "inconsistencies"? :?

Some are just random questions, some are just inconsistencies imo.

For example:

What were the blue firing turrets on the Kelvin ? I've personally not seen them before, they fired too fast for torpedoes.

Secondly, pulse phasers as seen both on the ships and the hand phasers weren't developed till way after... and i mean waaaaaaay after the Original timeline... iirc it's only until something like the Phaser Compression Rifle that was actually shot in pulses. I mean sure it's an alternate timeline but it doesn't mean that technology would have been researched faster/that fast. Not to mention that it would still follow Enterprise (as in the series) which had "beam" phasers rather than pulse ones.

Wouldn't the crashing of the Kelvin into the... Romulan ship at the start have caused a bigger explosion? I mean the Kelvin has a warp drive meaning that sure the crashing of the ship into the other one would have breached the antimatter containment causing an explosion similar to the one at the end of the film?

Why did the Romulans need the Vulcan's help to stop the sun from going Supernova? Pretty sure that Romulan micro blackhole technology is above Vulcan tech seeing as the former actually use it to power their starships.

Don't really see how one supernova could "threathen the whole galaxy" iirc Spock saying.

Sulu first: a) states that he knows fencing, b) then pulls out a Katana, c) actually tries to fence with a Katana before deciding to use it "properly"... eh ?!?!

Those are the current things i'd say were strange about the film... i realise that there aren't many Star Trek related inconsistencies there but i can't really remember any at the moment.

I'm going to go for "today's special effects are much better", sure it may not be strictly "canon", but it looked good! No idea what the little blue things firing were, but I think every Starfleet ship should have them! Brilliant for stopping incoming projectiles! :D

No idea - perhaps warp drives advanced a lot and were more powerful 25 years on...plus the Enterprise is a much bigger ship. Besides, the Ent-D didn't make much of a bang either.

Firstly, the ship Spock was in was actually technically Starfleet, not Vulcan, and it was designed by Geordi La Forge. They used it because it could withstand forces other starships simply couldn't, not to mention being faster. The Romulans didn't actually believe the 'nova posed a threat to the Empire, they were just going to evacuate Romulus and be done with it.

Apparently it had something to do with the energy released from destroying stellar bodies adding to the supernova's energy, or something. Ie. It would keep spreading.

I know nothing about these, so meh. :P

If you wanna get technical, Sulu mentions fencing because it's stated as an interest of his in a TOS ep. The rest of it is beyond even a Mark level of pedantry IMO.

It was a great movie. End of. Nobody cares about what you're talking about unless their the comic store owner from the Simpsons or they have no life.

I could sit here and debate the fineries of warp theory etc. but why?! I watch movies like Trek to be entertained, not to pick holes.

I didn't really care about him saying that he knew fencing... just that he tried to fence with the Katana which is pretty pointless fencing with.

And i completely agree hence why i gave it two ratings and why i'm hopefully going to buy it when it comes out on blu-ray.

I merely raised the points because i was asked to, not because i "cared" as such about them.
