No, not in the least. In the US, 'R' is one above '18'. Once upon a time, it was only used for adult films. Quite a lot of US cinema chains won't show R rated films and severe retail chains won't sell R rated DVDs either. Prometheus getting an R rating might be pretty bad for it in the US.

Quite what's going on that gets it an R rating in the US and a 15 in the UK, I have no idea...

Jon

Film certifications vary from country to country. I remember Alien 3 having an 18 here, but something like a 12 in France.

Alien, which was an X at time of release was downgraded to a 15 on its last cinematic outing.

Sensibilities from country to country vary wildly. As long as Prometheus tells a good story well, I don't think we should be concerned what the certificate is.

Apparently not. From the BBFC website:

That just means that the BBFC saw a version that required no suggested cuts to be made to get that classifiaction. They may have made cuts to ensure it got that rating before they put it in for classification.
Or the Americans just have a stranger classification sytem than we do.

I don't think anything's got higher than a 12 in France!

Yes, I know it has really, but they do seem to favour low certifications

Much better news, though I'm still concerned about 'Cop's aesthetic.

I'm actually starting to think there's gonna be too many women in it now, they weren't handled well in the first one, screen time-wise I mean.

Hey it turns out the BBFC didn't need to ask for cuts to be made to Prometheus, Ridley Scott did it all by himself.

Quote:
Prometheus has been released in the US as an R-rating, meaning viewers under the age of 17 will need to be accompanied by an adult. In the UK it is a 15 certificate.

The film is violent and tense but Sir Ridley - who has been an outspoken critic of the current rules of film ratings - insists he cut as much he could to open the film to a wider audience.

You can roll your eyes all you want, but Ridley is a commercial film-maker.
He's got to be bankable in order to get these films made. If the studio didn't think it could make it's money back, he wouldn't be allowed to do the stuff he does.
Also, there's got to be stuff for the DVD release too. Gone are the days when the DVD has just the film on it.

Also a good reason for the BD to be £30...

Hard to tell from the [LIFTED] websites, but in Belfast it seems you're pushed towards 3D Prometheus if you wanna watch it with the minimum of kids/teenagers after your tea

I'm going to watch a Sunday early matinee showing in 3D.
Even though it's in 3D it wasn't shot with that in mind, so hopefully that, mixed with Ridley's eye for art direction, will mean it'll not be pandering to the medium and it'll just be a good film.
