Saw 'Avengers Assembled' in the week. Better than I thought it would be. The Whedon groupies have been vastly exaggerating how complex and interesting the characterisation is (seriously, they're just full colour cardboard cutouts instead of being black & white) but the script doesn't take itself too seriously and all the major players put in reasonable performances, nobody is phoning it in. The SFX are first class and there are a couple of genuinely funny lines.

It's still as dumb as a brick but it's endearingly so, like a dog chasing it's own tail.

If you're looking for 'popcorn blockbuster' to watch on an evening on the sofa, you could do much, much worse. One thing though - in the cinema I went to see it at, it seemed incredibly loud. Might not want to crank up the home cinema too much unless you live in a detached house.

Just saw this a second time, in plain jane 2D, and it's still good fun.
There was about 7 of us in the cinema, it wasn't too loud, and we were sat bang in the centre.

I tried spotting the bits that were allegedly shot on the Canon 5DMkII & 7D, and I've a feeling there's a couple of shots where the quality is slightly degraded - check the first Hulk appearance sequence. I may be wrong though, clever post production has taken care of most of it I'm sure. But I'd stick a quid on there being at least one shot in there from the Canon.
I'm probably totally wrong.

Is that just a little bit too much for the suspension of your disbelief?

I feel my brain shrank a little during the trailer for that, it receded from my skull in horror at the prospect of a film, somehow, less intellectually stimulating than Wild Wild West.

Here's the thing : I don't think 'being mentally stimulating' is the only criteria for making a film. Any more than it is for all television or all books. For some films, that is the object, and fair enough. Some films, however, that simply isn't in the specification. They're designed to be emotionally stimulating (in whatever direction) rather than being intellectually so.

Both, IMO, are a valid reason to make a film. The criteria worth considering is how well they manage to perform by their own criteria. Let's be honest, Wild Wild West wasn't stimulating on any criteria.

AL:VH may in fact be a dull film. We'll have to waits and see. But it's not really valid to assess it against the same criteria as you would say Moon for example. You can have a great salad and a great hamburger but they aren't the same...

It's crap, "Soylent Green" is crap.

Not the most up-to-date review you'll ever read, granted.

Yeah I was referencing that last line

It didn't help that the film had been spoilered for me years ago. but Jesus, that film's bad.

I gathered - hence my embarrassed smiley

Spoilers suck. Don't highlight the above anyone planning to watch it for the first time... kinda spoils it.

It's almost 40 years old. There comes a time when the term 'spoiler' doesn't really apply.

When I watched it, the big surprise was one of the actors played Benjamin Sisko's dad in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

I keep watching this trailer, genuinely excited by a film at the cinema, first time for a while:

My absolute favourite, favouritest musical. That high note on "seemed" sends the hairs on my neck on end every time.

Ooo looks good, that.

It's just a pity they don't seem to want french people in a film about France. Ho-hum :(

Man on Wire (yes, I know), brill documentary on the man who wire-walked between the Twin Towers. Well worth watching, though definitely not for those who even think they're afraid of heights! It's funny, tense, the works...
