After long rumors that the old 30-pin port connector on all current iOS devices would be replaced soon, TechCrunch has independently verified with three sources that a new, smaller 19-pin port will debut with the new iPhone.
According to TechCrunch, three manufacturers independently agreed that the new 19-pin dock port, which currently has an unknown form factor and size, is currently in the works. Its introduction, likely with the new iPhone this fall, would have major repercussions on the huge accessory market for iOS devices. Obviously, accessory manufacturers would be greatly affected by such a dramatic change in hardware interface.
The new port is rumored to be similar in size to the new Thunderbolt ports, according to some leaked videos. However, TechCrunch's sources claim that the pin-out of the new iPhone port will be different from Thunderbolt's.

If this is true its nice to see Apple ignoring the spirit of EN 62684:2010 but hey its a good revenue stream selling the adapters required and the slice of royalties all the third party manufacturers will have to pay.

Ah screw 'em then. As much as I like my iPhone, I won't be buying anything else from Apple.

FFS, Jobs is dead, how about you quit acting like self-righteous dicks?

Guess people aren't buying the current adaptors etc as they already have them.
Either keep the old one or move to USB. Don't design another proprietry one!

I’ll remind you that Apple is not an EU country, and, like many US countries, is focussed far more on the home larker than it is elsewhere. Siri on the iPhone is limited outside of the USA - can’t find places on the map, for example. Companies based in the USA have a rather dim view of the EU and its regulations, and while it’s an important market to be part of, I don’t think they are going to bust a gut over it unless it becomes mandatory.

A new Dock was rumoured to be on the way for the successor to the iPhone 4. That didn’t happen. If such a dock does appear, then accessory manufacturers will no doubt be making two versions - the iPhone 4 and 4S markets are still live, and supported by iOS. Again, this is a rumour. Until someone from Apple stands on a stage and says “hey - new dock socket” we need to assume that it’s not going to happen.

And I will remind you, sir, that the European Union is the largest single market in the world.

This move just shows, yet again, Apple's contempt for its consumers and other businesses alike.

Of course Apple are well known for using proprietary technologies and not playing nicely with industry standards - such as DLNA - so I'm not surprised. I am, however, surprised that people continue to not only accept this [LIFTED] treatment by Apple, but defend it.

Obviously their word is worth nothing:

Quote:
All signatories agreed to develop a common specification for the EPS "to allow for full compatibility and safety of chargers and mobile phones." As of 2011, 14 mobile phone manufacturers and technology providers have signed the MoU — the original 10 signatories, Apple, LG, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Qualcomm, RIM, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and Texas Instruments as well as Atmel, Emblaze Mobile, Huawei Technologies and TCT Mobile (Alcatel)

Or Apple have a different take on the words "agreed" and "compatibility".

Because I'm lazy and can't be bothered, can anyone tell me how many of those which have signed up currently abide by the agreement in shipping units?

Just asking.

All of them as far as I can tell. Except Apple.

Even things like the Amazon Kindle, my HP Slate and various cameras and gizmos use it.

Samsung and Rim do. As My wife and I often swap chargers by accident.

As an iPhone user, I'm struggling to care right now.

I have an iPhone. I have used other current phones and prefer my iPhone. When I get the next iPhone I'll get a new USB cable with it.

As far as I can see I'll be no worse off.

If you don't want to buy the next iPhone then fair enough.

Symptomatic of the iNeed generation... cacooned in iPlayer World where everything "just works", no one has to care about anyone else and the biggest news of the year is the new shiny thing.
