' According to Scott, the decision to film in 3D added $10 million to the film's budget. [88] Since 3D films need high lighting levels on set, the hallmark atmosphere of the Alien films with darkness and shadows was added in post-production through grading processes, while the 3D equipment was based on post-Avatar technology. [89][90]' Might be your answer there, Wiki link has the sources: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prometheus_(film)#section_3

SPOLERS
One thing that has been bugging me... why did the engineer kill himself at the waterfall at the beginning? I thought it might be because he knew he would die anyway?

Potential spoilery answer: He was spawning life somewhere - possibly Earth, likely given the connections with the ancient artwork, and the destination of the ship on LV223 for what appeared to be a clean-up operation (the implication here being that Earth somehow went wrong, or was in need of further modification).

Initially, I wondered was he a Dr Kelly-type character, especially with the talk of a weapons factory later on

Looking at the way it was shown, I took it to be seeding as well. Essentially spreading his DNA, via water, to "grow" new life. The question is, where did it take place??
One of my favourite bits to be honest. Photography was stunning.

I think the location is ambiguous, but I believe that it was meant to be Earth. The whole film is deliberately obfuscated. We get the story, but the underlying themes, as well as the threads like this are designed to cause discussion for a long time. I rather think at a Prometheus 2 would answer some questions, but further confuse.

I like the “annoying” aspects of it though. If it has legs (for want of a better expression when it comes to genetic mutations), this film will provoke discussion for a long time. I think it’s fair to say that Alien has a longevity that exceeds the film’s top layer story. Ditto Blade Runner. I can’t help thinking that this film has been more designed with this in mind than the others I mentioned here, but even so, there is, I think, enough material there to keep people thinking for a while yet.

I'd like to agree with you. But aside from that opening sequence and the odd occasional moment elsewhere, where is the thought provocation?! Those questions are the kind of things that I think about EVERY SINGLE DAY (I know - I think too much). And at first I was thinking they might get some "mainstream" attention. Seems I was a tad over-optimistic. Interestingly, I would say that overall, I enjoyed Prometheus about equally with Alien. I've never been able to finish Blade Runner. I've tried twice, but find it almost entirely uninteresting beyond the basic android premise. Herecy on this forum I suspect, but there you have it.

Well enjoyed the film
As stated above some of it was (deliberatly??) vague and I assume there will be a No2
As for the IMAX that was great - the opening scene of flying through the mountains was great in 3D - not sure if it was much needed used post that tho
