The average boss fight IS a load of rubbish, basically a lazy way of holding back a cut-scene or big reveal. That said, they're needed, they just need a lot more thought. And you shouldn't be spending 10 minutes plus trying to beat someone, and especially not with an arcane move from the very beginning of the game that you'd totally forgot about

I tend to hate these things.

I recall boss levels in Arkham City. The best one was Mr Freeze because it was easy once you realised you couldn't do the same thing again. I also liked the Ras al-Ghul one too, as well as the Scarecrow ones in the first game.

I can't remember the last boss fight I actually liked. Mostly they're just tedious and repetitive.

I played through a few worlds of Super Mario Bros 3 with my GF a few nights ago, the bosses and mini-bosses were excellent. I seem to recall the bosses in Kirby's Dreamland being similarly good, perhaps because the consoles' lack of power prohibited the big wind-up cutscene most bosses have in modern games.

Metroid Prime also had good boss fights, even though it subscribes to the "naught but the weak spot" philosophy the author of the article in the OP hates. But personally I didn't mind them, since you often have enough health and time to figure out how to fight the boss, dodge their attacks and exploit the weak spot. Same with the Legend of Zelda bosses, though I never actually realised how to beat Puppet Gannon in Ocarina of TIme until a few years after beating the game (I slapped him with the Biggoron Sword when he flew near the floor, instead of playing magical tennis with him) :)

What's really been pissing me off with boss fights recently is the 'narrowing circle with no relation to actual button input, press it quickly and hope for the best!' method (Captain America, Castlevania, the list's endless). It's an especially sad attempt at outdoing QTEs, when all they've done is replace one [LIFTED] aspect with something even worse... The amount of games I've sent back to Lovefilm after an hour cos of that sort of nonsense
