I suspect Sarkozy had another fantastic meeting with lobbyists there, once he'd gotten rid of the film and music industry-types.

So you have to have one in the car, but you don't have to use it. Genius!

Actually, you have to have two.

Motorists driving without the two breathalyser tests will be handed a fine of 11 euros

only 11 euros, so its better taking the fine rather than buying all that kit which prob costs a bit more than 11 euros :P

Retailers in Britain say sales of breathalysers have risen considerably due to the law, the Press Association reports.

Car accessory retailer Halfords said there had been unprecedented demand, but said that 6 out of 10 Britons travelling to France were not aware of the changes.

Ripping off the Brits again? Only breathalysers made and sold in France are deemed legal. If you have one made outside of France, you will still be fined - according the news reports here.

That said, the chemical breathalyser is only 5€, so 2 of them are still cheaper than a fine.

Don't forget the HiVis has to be in the car not the boot and needs to be more than just a vest ........

It has to be the sleeved vest, iirc.

This latest farce pretty much guarantees that I won't be going to France.

They sell them everywhere for next to nothing, so I really don't see why anyone would get upset by it. There's far more important things in life to complain about!

Indeed. when I went abroad, I bought a HiVis from B&Q before I left. Cost me about 2 quid.

I think some of the regulations are a bit finicky - requiring things to be in the car rather than in the boot for example - but the basic principle seems sound.

I kind of wonder where these things would go in my car. Not much room for extra stuff in the cabin.

There is that. Not a lot of storage space in a Lotus Elise, for example.

When you see the same twat driving aorund the UK for two weeks with a duff headlight, the German law stating you must have a complete set of replacement bulbs in the car makes a lot of sense.

This is an area where the EU should step in re: extinguishers, bulbs, Hi Vis. And even chemical breathalysers.

Make it the norm and then there is no excuse!
