Does this make anyone else think of Settlers of Catan?

There have been a few Olympic themed trailers/adverts on tonight - it's obviously ramping up now Euro 2012 has finished.

They are mostly awful, and mostly bizarre. The worst one is BA's advert which not only relegates the olympic stadium to the status of an airport arrival terminal - and we all know how we all love spending time in those, right? - but also uses 'London Calling' by The Clash, which is about the least likely song ever if you actually want people to come to London. It's closely followed by the coke ad that isn't even actually an olympics ad, it's an ad based around the fact they are one of the sponsors of the torch relay. THE TORCH RELAY. The most utterly tedious and pointless processions since.. well, since that thing on the Thames for the Queen. This ad includes the utterly ludicrous spectacle of people doing taekwondo on a festival stage while the band is playing. Just... I can't begin to describe how utterly incompetent the marketing people attached to these adverts are.

The only half decent one is one based around a poem that appears to be based on the phrase 'take the stage'. And that fails because while I can remember the poem, I can't for the life of me remember what the company behind it is.

Well, I've just sat through an advert break where every product has been from P&G and has had some tenuous link to the Olympics. Even tampons.

Conversation with a friend:

F: Are you going to watch the torch relay tomorrow?
Me: Why would I want to watch a Nazi ceremony?

*stunned silence*

Just goes to show that most people don't know their history.

Another friend so very nearly got me to watch it but my future boss rang to offer me the job.

Heartbroken I am... ;)

I would have gone to watch it today had it been a proper relay instead of running 300m, getting another torch out etc etc.

It used to be a proper relay using the same torch - why has it now changed?

Must cost a fortune?

They decided the flame mattered not the torch. Given it's coming from Greece and you can't take a naked flame on a plane, it was actually a bit hard to get the torch over here.

IIRC I say a documentary on the making of it and they cost around £400 each to make (there not solid gold or anything). I think they said they've made something like 1400 of them. People who 'do' the relay can buy the particular torch they carry at a discount and a certain number are for sale on the LOCOG site as souvenirs. Even if they gave them away, it would be an almost infinitesimally small expense compared to the vast, ludicrous pile of money chucked at the Olympics.

They used a Davey Lamp to carry the flame of the plane

is anyone actually going to the olympics? why is there so much talk of a bomb going off in the day killing lots and lots of people, apparently the whole arena will be blown. I looked up all the coincidences myself, rather scary, 9/11 starts all over again....

No - not going, though where I live is on the railway line to Stratford so I would imagine the city where I live will be playing host to visiting spectators.

There is a lot of talk about anti aircraft rocket launchers being put on buildings around the site. As the sensible people point out, shoot down a rogue aircraft over a populated area and the debris (which will no doubt be on fire) is going to have to go somewhere.

Not sure if a 9/11 event will happen, though I am sure that some people are giving it some thought.

I'm not going. I didn't get either of the tickets I applied for.
