Behold - the Hype Begins. http://www.omnicorp.com/As I suspected, their ED-209 looks a bit more bad-ass in a pointy-spiky kind of way than the ED209 we know and love from the original. I do wonder how this rather bloody and NSFW scene can be improved on. Darkly humorous, and despite the limited effects used, very effective. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9l9wxGFl4k

I remember the TV series. That was awful. The First 2 films were good.

RoboCop 3 seemed to tie in with the TV series in some fashion. The first two were the best, as they retained the very dark humour that made it work. The third film turned it into more of a pantomime, which the TV series seemed to continue. I remember reading an article about how the first film was made. They (obviously) could not light and shoot RoboCop as a person - they had to resort to techniques usually used to shoot cars. This got tricky when RoboCop was interacting with human actors. There was also a mini series. They built a black RoboCop and had some secretary’s brain wired into a computer which was overseeing a massive building.

Another example that Hollywood has run out of ideas for new storylines for films so decides on yet anotherremake I see they are re-making Total Recall

My general rule is that if it was made in the 80s we're about to see it again = Turtles, He-Man, Equalizer, Thundercats, Highlander...

I'm fed up with people retelling all these old stories. In the theatre locally it's Romeo & Juliet, Hello Dolly, elsewhere the RSC are doing Much Ado About Nothing - where will it end? How about they do some new stories for a change? Eh? http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2366/what-are-the-seven-basic-literary-plotsEdit: Even 'Dude Where's My Car?' was rebooted as 'The Hangover', but we all apparently loved that.

I totally get what you're saying, but they are absolutely strip-mining the 80s and early 90s this decade. And it's not like I'm totally opposed to remakes etc either, as I've mentioned before. I actually have little problem with this re-do since it's been so tarnished, but I think they'll seriously struggle to give it the character it had. Same with Recall.

Yeah, I get what you're saying. Clearly there's a lot of people in positions to write cheques who grew up in and around that period. But, let's not forget, Recall is a version of a Philip K. Dick story - hardly an original 'written for cinema' cinematic tale. Robocop is, more or less, a Jesus meets Frankenstein tale. The original is good, yes, but let's not be too reverent about their boundless originality. Something can still be good fun without necessarily breaking new ground; just look at the inexplicable popularity of The Hangover.

I totally understand this sentiment, but you know what, it's not actually ruining the originating film. I was all "stop raping my childhood" not long ago, but there's been so many reboots and re-imaginings recently that I've started to look at things a little differently. The original Robocop will still be the original Robocop. The original Total Recall will still be the original Total Recall. The original Highlander will still be the original Highlander. These remakes will only go to strengthen the impact that those originals had on the individual and the culture at that time. The impact of the originating films won't be lessened by an inferior remake, it'll be strengthened and reaffirmed. And if the remake is good, then what? I guess I'm just trying to say that instead of seeing the remakes and reimaginings as that, try and see it as a continuation of the original, because if they tank at the box office (see the recent Conan remake) then they'll be forgotten and ignored, like tears in the rain, and everyone will still think of the original film. The new film can not be worse than RoboCop 3. If it is, then there is no hope. I hope Mark is right - I can see his reasoning with that. My concern would be how the new film affects perception of the originals, which could, as he says, improve its standing. I’m not sure this is all “stop raping my childhood” as he says, though. A lot of criticism is levelled at the failure of studios to take chances on new ideas, preferring to plunder the past and look for easy to update properties they already own. It’s economics driving this rather than creativity a lot of the time.
