In my mind, the next World War will not be between companies, but between corporations. It starts with legal battles, moves on to more direct forms of combat using the internet as a conduit for attacks against infrastructure, and ends badly with private corporate armies moving in. By this time, nation states have started to collapse (in part due to the fallout), and military attempts to subdue the problems fail and they eventually become subsumed into the corporate mess.
World War IV will be a private enterprise, not a national one.

We’ve already had WWIII - or we are currently somewhere in the middle of it - according to some academics. There was a TV series on Channel 4 a couple of ears ago which demonstrated that the 20th Century was one long succession of conflict and wars, starting in 1907 and stretching on into the 21st century. The programme argued that WWIII is the proxy wars being fought by the super powers in places such as Africa and the Middle East where few troops are used, but weapons and support are provided to local combatives. It was an interesting series, which I hope is repeated sometime so I can watch it again.

According to other academics we haven't even had WWII yet. The Great War being the last in a series of European civil wars (100 years war, Spanish Succession, 7 Years War, Napoleonic, Jenkins' Ear etc), which of course promotes WWII to WWI.
