The age rating for Black Swan generated the most complaints to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) in 2011, the ratings body has revealed.

The erotically charged thriller, rated 15 in the UK, generated 40 complaints from audiences.

According to the BBFC's annual report, "some complainants had expected to see a film about ballet".

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-18797882

Quote:
What ruffled the feathers of most complainants, according to the BBFC, was a sex scene between two female characters.

"While the scene is visually discreet, narratively justified and within the 15 guidelines criteria, some correspondents felt it was pornographic in nature," the report reads.

"That it was a sex scene between two women was an aggravating factor for some who argued that portrayals of homosexual activity should either be restricted to the 18 category, or not shown at all.

"The high number of complaints for Black Swan demonstrates the disconnect that sometimes occurs between a viewer's expectations of a film and its actual content."

I would suggest that a film just about ballet would attract a lower certificate, and that a 15 would include more than just a few girlies prancing around on stage. There may be some content that adds colour to the water. Clearly some people have left their common sense behind.

It was only 40 complaints out of about 2.7 million people that went to see it. I'm guessing those 40 were on day release or similar.

Not seen the film (but have seen the scene) so technically shouldn't comment but will.

There's a world of difference between innuendo and hardcore. Similarly, there are "softer" scenes that lie between the two. Innuendo I would count as say the closing of a door, or the rumble of a nearby trolley (catch me if you can). Hardcore is the stuff that should be shown to over 18s only. The softer scenes seem to be more what they would show on Channel 5 back when it used to show that kind of stuff on late viewing.

In all honesty, I don't think I've seen anything more than a topless scene in a 15-rated film. I think only the TV show "The Inbetweeners" showed more on TV and it was male genitalia related.

I thought the general content of the movie was more likely to scar a teenager than the sex scenes. It is quite a gory movive

particularly not when they're of the same sex, for those people who object in the first place.

I do wonder if people are instantly outraged by such things, or have to realise they should be before they complain.

It seems to me quite often people hear about other people who are outraged and, given those people are much like them, feel they should therefore be outraged too (if that makes sense). It's a peer pressure thing.

Whilst it might be stereotyping rather, I would be curious to see what newspapers the complainers read if they read one. Can't help but feel that the Daily Mail would rank rather high in the list.

There was a myth that Aberystwyth had banned it. Sue Jones-Davies, who played Judith, was mayor of Aber between 2008-2009 :D

Several did ban it. Not sure if Aber was one of them.
