It says all eligible products will be back on the list. That presumably excludes the Retina Display MacBook Pro as it's been built in such a way as to be very difficult if not impossible to recycle (bits like the battery bonded to the aluminium with industrial grade adhesive for instance.

I love the Apple double speak on their re-entry - they are re-certifying products which meet the EPEAT standards, but then say the standard need to take into account modern manufacturing practices, like gluing the batteries in place, gluing the screen to the glass plate etc.

Erm, no, the EPEAT standards are there to ensure that such things don't get certified as being recyclable!

Are Apple taking lessons from the British government?

Can I just ask a question?

Why do any of you care? As far as I'm aware, nobody here is either in the procurement department of a large American government organisation, nor is anyone likely to need equipment to be supplied by them. Yes, it's 'a u turn' but it's a u turn in a market which is utterly irrelevant to anyone on this board, nor is it likely to register as anything other than a blip on Apple's corporate finances in the long term (if you think they sold a ton of computers to the USG before this, you're crazy - people buy Apple kit because they like it themselves, not as a business decision, which is why Apple has next to no presence in the enterprise market).

Ok it's an item of IT related gossip. But Seriousy? Aren't our own corporations and/or government doing enough stupid things to keep us all occupied?

When we buy household items, whether it be cleaning materials, furniture or electronic equipment, we look at their recyclability and / or efficiency.

So how recyclable a product is is an important factor.

Which makes buying smartphones so hard, nearly all of them use some sort of bonding and increasing numbers are sealing the batteries into the casing.

true it would only be a blip on the corporate finances as Apple is mainly an iPhone/iPad company, the actual conputer side is becoming more and more irrelavent to there bottom line.

So all the "designer/marketing et al" people demanding to use Apple kit are just kidding themselves and should be using Windows/Linux based equipment instead ;)

In a broad sense yes. The laptops still sell quite well apparently but desktop sales aren't what they once were. IIRC Macs are now something between a third and a quarter of Apple's business. Not irrelevant as such, but not the main thing.

The 'creative' industries are a very small fraction of the enterprise market.

for the last sx months its ~14% down from ~20% when compared to the same period from the previous year. The iphone/ipad contribute ~73% up from 59%. So you could argue is it time for Apple to dump the desktop arena entirely and focus on the big money earners of iPhone/iPad ... not that they need to as they make money hand over fist.

I know of a multi billion pound budget marketing funtion that makes a big fuss about the "need" to use apple kit.
