Children in poor and middle-income families are facing a summer "stuck at home" as they cut back on days out and leisure activities, a charity says.
Family Action says standard activities are increasingly out of the reach of many, with a day out costing £80.
A poll of 2,214 mothers for the charity suggests 54% planned to cut back on trips because of money worries.
The charity is urging "rip off" firms to stop unfair pricing and improve offers for families all year round.
Family Action Chief Executive Helen Dent said: "Families are facing summer on a shoestring with parents and children cooped up at home as a result of falling incomes and rising prices.

When i were a kid, back in the good old days, if we wanted a "day out" that meant b*ggering off with some friends or shock horror family members and enjoying the outdoors without the need to spend any money.
Thankfully now, I dont have kids and I have enough money to avoid the outdoors

We usually take the kids down to the beach, when the weather is good.

That's this year written off then.

Family holiday meant taking a tent and going camping. So we’d spend a couple of weeks in various fields with disgracefully unsanitary toilets going places on the cheap. So days on beaches, cheap access to National Trust properties (we had cards) which were dull, but cheap, and cooking food on Calor Gas cookers. Our last ever camping holiday was when we were down in the new Forest and the Fastnet gales broke the tent. We had to pack up early and go home that summer.

I agree, we used to cgi out a lot, a picnic and a towel were all you needed for a day at the beach.

On the other hand, when I brought the family to visit the UK, a Bus Tour of Londinium cost over 100 quid for 2 adults and 2 students...

I have memories of family holidays to a cottage in Wales.
And Dad worrying if there was enough cash in the account to put petrol in the car for the trip home.

Our summer holiday was always the same. My grandparents live in Cornwall, so we used to visit them for a week. I used to love the beaches with their fascinating rock pools and little caves, collecting shells etc. Some years we'd even buy an ice cream!

Nowadays, they'd just stick it on the plastic and worry about paying it off the next month. Which is part of the problem I think.

There are plenty of free places to go. I was in the Natural History Museum last week for example. That was free.

I think our days were spent either:

- visiting family members eg in London
- staying with grandparents (just the kids; grandparents were within a 15-20min walk)
- a day out to a theme park or some close by attraction eg Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick castle etc.
