Never had any desire to join AOL back in the day. Mainly because of all the crapware you had to install on your PC to use them. I assume that changed when ADSL came along though. I've stuck with Force9 (or the companies that bought them out) since I first got on the internet in 1997.

When I started working a number of my clients had AOL. Their software took forever to load. We gradually moved them away to other ISPs. One company had Compuserve accounts. Got rid of them too.

I think you're assuming AOL could just be used as as ISP. You didn't have to have AOL as an ISP to be able to use other facikities and you don't need their software to access the facilities. I still use my AOL email address which I can retain for free for the rest of my life as all my IT contacts know it so it will be essential if I need to look for another job.
I haven't used AOL as an ISP for about 9 years.

I recall when we had the internet enabled at our house. We bought a modem and we used an AOL CD with 30-days trial to go on the internet. We were with them for a year or two before we moved to freeserve.

Anyone else remember the sound of a modem dialing up? I used to be able to tell by the noise pattern whether or not the connection was successful before the notification popped up in Windows.
