1 and 2

I have 1 CV that is 2 pages, 1 that is just a single page

Simply because the 2 page one is good for recruitors, but the 1 page is a req for some 'modern' companies

Sorry, Linux is quite right, it should be 5 years' of experience.

There's no need for the apostrophe if you use the word "of", also I don't think it's truly necessary to put in an apostrophe at all, it's just a style thing. I tend to avoid using an apostrophe by re-writing the sentence to something like: I have years of experience in.

It's the same sort of deal as using an apostrophe when you say things like "'phone", I don't bother as phone is a common word even if it is short for mobile telephone.

Current advice is not to write in the first person. I went with Linux.

In the shortest amount of time I've ever done it (1.5hrs this morning) I've gone from a two pager, to a one pager. Interestingly, two of the example CVs available from Rezscore use the sentence without of or an apostrophe. Has anyone used the site?

My original two pager (which I used to think was pretty good) got a "D" with the following scores (out of 100):
Brevity: 1
Impact: 66
Depth: 99

The one pager is scoring a "C" with a 99, 74, 99. I'm pretty chuffed with that. But there's obviously still room for improvement.

Two pages.

Frankly, if the value of my life is so low that they can't be arsed to read 31 years contracted to two pages, I don't want to work for them.

Technically, isn't it a contraction of 'five years of experience' rather than the possessive case? Just dropping the 'of' doesn't require an apostrophe.

Nearly but no. You're correct in that it's most definitely the genitive case. However it is specifically the Saxon Genitive where the possession is formed by means of the clitic 's

Would you refer to "one year experience"? No - because it doesn't make any sense without the genitive.

In the genitive, the phrase "one year" is a noun phrase i.e. it acts as one singular noun. Just as you'd write "Jon's laptop", you write "one year's experience".

So to take that further, the phrase "two years" is a noun phrase i.e. it acts as one plural noun. Just as you'd write "the brothers' feud", you write "two years' experience".

It's "one year's experience" and "two years' experience".

Great grammatical explanation Jim, thanks for that.

As for the pages thing. I really think one page gets you noticed. And given that everybody here is two pages, that seems to be even more true. Hmmmm.....

Depends what's on that one page.
If it's focussed, appropriate and impressive enough, why use more?
