As I've said before, Steam is installed and working fine on my Windows 8 machine. The gaming performance is actually about 50% better than it was under XP, taking Skyrim as an example.

I think the fear is that MS may start to follow Apple and have a closed store that everyone has to use and pay a massive unjustified cut.

But, that was my point. Yes, the Mac App Store is a closed system, but no-one's forcing you to use it - you can install pretty what you want at the moment - even in 10.8 Mountain Goat.

There shouldn't be a question mark on the title of this thread and it should be follows not following. MS have always copied Apple *hides*

I thought you were. I thought iOS apps had to be bought via Apple. You can't install anything that hasn't been approved by Apple and given them their 30% cut.

That's true as far as iOS goes, but not OS X on the desktop, which also has an app store.

Erm, exactly my point, thanks Alex * wonders if I'm invisible here * To compare iOS to Windows 8 isn't really a fair comparison - one's a mobile OS and the other's a desktop OS. You need to be comparing Mac OS X to Windows 8, as they're both desktop operating systems - and on a Mac you aren't tied to just using the App Store to install software on your Mac itself, it's one of the options but you're free to install software from wherever the hell you want. iOS, on the other hand, is tied to the iTunes App Store - note, this is completely separate to the Mac App Store which is a separate application in its own right, although both use an Apple ID to buy stuff with.

You say that, but Windows 8 is a combined OS with mobile features heavily hyped. I think MS have been influenced much more by iOS than osX .

What bugs me more is that a lot of companies such as mine use very old software ( 90s or even early 80s) to run calculations. These software are the best written to date and we need them to work. Will the work in windows 8? We already use some software in a VC linux computer. Windows might end up losing their stronghold on offices. ooops.

In some ways, I agree. Our computers run xp and IE6 because of custom made software.

I think we'll be going down the citric route soon so no apps on the local machine - all run in virtualisation so easy swap outs should anything go wrong. clicky
