Sorry to hear about this.
Misdiagnosis in psychiatry tends to be more down to either:
- lack of information at time of diagnosis (ie wasn't given or didn't take entire history) - new changes/development in the person (ie they have one diagnosis initially and this changes over time) - revision of diagnostic criteria (ie goalposts have moved)
It doesn't surprise me that this kind of thing would happen in psychiatry. It'a not like other specialties where there's hard and fast rules, easily comparable data. I've seen two psychiatrists diagnose the same patient with two conditions and the patient would happily fulfil most of the criteria for both without something to push it to either side.
I wouldn't initially go guns-ablazing as this puts a defensive wall up. Concentrate on your family and your brother getting better. It's very easy to allow emotions to cloud your judgement or actions. Then go on a recon mission, find out why it happened. You can ask for copies of notes (there's a max charge for photocopying) but you need someone else to look at it, preferably someone who has a background in psychiatry. Then consider whether there's a case for it and use a suitable solicitor.

Thanks very much everyone. I don' know all the details yet, heck my Mum only found out all this on Tuesday of last week, so a lot of things have to be sorted out yet and we need to find out what's happening with my brother. He's currently in hospital so information is likely going to make its way to my Mum over the following weeks.

It's turning into one of those weeks. First I'm told I can't have my Xmas leave the way I've had it for something like 10 years - I'll fcuking have it, even if I go off with 'stress'. Cnuts. The jeans I ordered about a month ago still haven't arrived, and the last few days my internet has been tragic. A new router arrived today but I can't even get O2 to listen long enough to answer the simple question of 'Do I actually need it activated, cos I haven't received any word from you?' Never mind getting down to 'Do I need to install the CD and go through that whole process?' I'm back on the original router

Been on 2 hunts this morning and it's been facilities fail. Firstly I needed to get some printing and copying done. Went to the 1st one which was in use but I happily waited and chatted to my mate the electrician. After a while lady using it said she still needed it so I walked round to the other side of the office to the 2nd which had 2 people using it or waiting to use it. Went to 3rd one and the last one on our floor and it had the engineers bag in front of it and the front flap was open *sigh* So off I trek to the 2nd floor and find one straight away. Next I want a cappuccino. Go to our machine and it spews out hot milky water with a bit of brown stuff so I chuck that down the sink and go to the other machine on oour floor. Guess what? Out of service. So yet again have to go down to the 2nd floor to get my coffee.

If only somebody would tell me if it's possible that I've been mis-sold personal payment insurance.

I can forward your details, but only if you can point me in the direction of someone who can get me some compensation for the accident I haven't had, or get me a government grant to fit the loft insulation that I already have.

I know just the person, they also have a large amount of money they need to deposit so if you could send me you bank details I'm sure they can help.

And now I'm without a proper internet connection until Tuesday at best - I'm also not sure how my old router went slow and the new one straight up didn't receive, know what I mean? Oh, and could I obtain a new house phone?

My room has two separate power supplies. The air-con is on a timed circuit, overnight , and the others are on 24/7. I used a 4-gang adaptor so I could use the air-con (fan only) all day, otherwise it gets stifling. Today I find that the management have replaced the air-con plug to the original socket and glued it in place!

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

You could always cut the flex and rewire a new plug and then glue that into the socket that you want...
