Hi, the OH has decided she wants a tablet to take on holiday and to surf with at home. I have no idea what to look for and which are the best value. Can anyone shed some light please. I think we want 9-10 inch screen... but that is about it. Don't want to pay £400+ for an Ipad if i can help it...

Google Nexus 7 if you want really cheap, but still good. Smaller than you've said, but I personally think 7" is a better compromise between portability and legibility. But if you want 10. The Asus transformers seem to have the best of everything, but I don't think you'll get one for much less than an iPad.

To be fair, Apple still sells the iPad 2 starting at £329.

Yup, the biggest change to te iPad 3 was the retina display. Otherwise I'm lead to believe performance is comparable.

Motorola Xoom or the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Both can be had for under £300.

Or the Acer A200, which I'd recommend. HMV sell it if you wanna have a look. I find weight and screen res to be key cos they're all much of a muchness...

My impression with Android is that you must forget all about software.

4.0's absolutely fine, and you might find Samsung will upgrade it. Give it a Google for news, even Sony are pretty good for updates IME.

I would be very, very surprised if it doesn't get at least Jelly Bean. Beyond that it's impossible to tell, but if push comes to shove there are plenty of community ROMs (Cyanogen Mod etc) which will do the job. If you want the best chance of future updates then Nexus devices have always been the way to go, but most big manufacturers now give their devices at least one update, with some even getting two or more. When official support ends, you usually find you can still update your device using community ROMs such as Cyanogen.
