The Shield is awesome if you like properly gritty cop dramas.

True story. It's actually awesome if you like protagonists who blur the lines between "good" and "bad", if you love interesting and well written characters with arcs, or if you just love any kind of great drama. Superb show.

It started off great, but Vic and his team became ever more unbelievable as they dug their hole... I watched the first 2 seasons, but I ran out of patience with them.

So you don't like anything out of the US in the past 15 years?? Some good shows there, but a lot has been made since the 90s which is outstanding television on a number of different levels.

Can you think of any good, episodic TV show made in the UK that you would recommend to someone? Other than Doctor Who, I can't, then again, I don't really watch police procedural dramas other than NCIS (which again, isn't UK made). Mark

You could try Burn Notice. It's still in production but it's been going for six seasons now. It's a good, fun popcorn kind of show, and it has Bruce Campbell in it, which is always a plus.

Good shows, Caz - yes. But not in the same league. The reason British actors are fronting US shows is obvious. US shows are better.
Sure they pump out a lot of crap, but the stuff they do well, they do VERY well.
IMO the only truly GREAT show on your list is Life On Mars. But this is a rare occurence. Luther is good largely due to it's star, who made his name in your favourite US show of all time!
Fact is, we churn out mounds of crime dramas and murder mysteries and that's about it. Our documentaries are outstanding, but I can't think of anything else that's on the same level as Game of Thrones (or anything made by HBO in the last decade for that matter).

British Shows
Downton Abbey Scott & Bailey Prisoners' Wives Stella Starlings Call the Midwife Misfits Luther Hit & Miss (one of the best shows on TV ever) Life on Mars Ashes to Ashes Shameless The Mighty Boosh Mistresses Cold Feet to these I would add Spaced, Misfits as well as Silent Witness, Torchwood and Doctor Who!
British Actors
House Game of Thrones Sinbad Tera Nova Newsroom
Older Shows
Faulty Towers Are you Being Served The Good Life Blackadder Father Ted Black Books IT Crowd The Peep Show Teachers 2 Pints of Lager & a packet of Crisps
These older shows only have an appeal if you're British I think. Most of them are just not funny (save Father Ted and blackbooks)
