So far my main contenders are the Sony which Matt posted, and the Gigabyte U2442V Ultrabook. Unfortunately, hands-on testing which I really want is next to impossible. Also, I want to order it this weekend, preferably last weekend so I can have it already! Any thoughts on the Gigabyte clicky ? My main thought is I don't like the delivery date from there! My main problem with the Gigabyte is lack of storage. I was going to say I can keep the games on the SSD and use the SD slot for media... but there doesn't seem to be an SD slot. I'm likely to be using this away from home with limited access to internet (maybe 3g) so streaming from my server isn't always going to be an option | | | | |
It does have by the looks of it 2 USB3 slots so you coyuld always get a couple of 32GB (or larger) USB keys to keep your media on

They break off so easily when you fall asleep in bed.

Personally, I don't like the look of the Gigabyte. But I can't put my finger on why. Just not excited about it.
But that doesn't really help, sorry!!

If it gets here after all the trouble with my stupid credit card! Not only did my normal card bounce, but it's also managed to bounce my Tesco order. I think they've cancelled the card because I don't usually buy laptops!!

Banks seem to be very leery about larger-than-normal CC transactions at the mo. I had my payment for car insurance (~600 quid) declined last week, which caused me significant problems. No reason to decline it that I can see other than the fact it's a slightly unusual amount.

Dispatched...
The credit card thing is doubly annoying because I had credit on there I was trying to use from a cash-back scheme...

I like my Sony except for two things: 1) Crap vertical viewing angles. 2) It's not as rugged as my old laptop. My old one survived almost five years of rig abuse. The Sony lasted six months beofre I had to send it for repairs to the power botton. Since then it's lasted another two years, but even so......;

I have to agree with you. My first thought after "ooh shiny" was about the viewing angle and bendiness of the screen. Very disappointing, but a relatively small niggle compared to the performance of it. Gorgeous keyboard and general usability. Over all I think it was a good choice, although not necessarily in the value for money department.

"Overpriced, but good" would be a fair assessment then?

Let's be polite and say you pay a premium for a little extra quality! Still a lot more laptop for the money than some other brands
