Yes.
I went from a 3 to a 4 and in terms of hardware, yes they are vastly different.
I missed out the 4s and I'm looking to upgrade to the next iPhone release.

if your brothers have offered to buy you one get at least an iPhone 4. With the upcoming release (rumoured) of the iPhone5 the 3GS will soon be an obselete (in Apples eyes) phone.
If your thinking of any other phone get a Samsung Galaxy S2 (or really go for it and get a S3), as your a mac user, according to Apple they are so similair you will never know the difference
Though IMHO the S3 totaly p*sses over the iPhone 4 ( I dont know about the 4S as I never owned that model)
You missed the whole 'cheapest' thing, right?
Thete was also the word 'best' in there too, and I don't think getting a 3G/3Gs is the best option.

It's the retina screen that makes the difference for me. Given what I use my phone for, I could manage with the speed of the 3GS, but i wouldn't give up the screen.

Snap. The only thing I think we missed was Siri... and who uses it other than 'Hey, have you seen this?'

I wasn't bothered about the 4s. My 4 contract has just expired and I'm thinking I may skip the 5 as well. I'll wait and see what it offers, but I reckon I could do with this phone another year at least.

I find having a high res screen on a tiny phone like that utterly pointless. But my phone's bigger than everybody else, so I'm biassed. We look at too many small screens all day as it is

The Galaxy Ace is a great shout. But if an iPhone can be done cheaply enough, it will of course probably feel quite logical. There's also the plus that if you use iTunes on a Mac it's not a complete bag of wank.

Trying not to sound patronising, I think if you tried it you wouldn't go back. Perhaps it appeals to my print based background, but screen resolution has always grated on me and to have something screen based with the resolution of print is just amazing no matter what the size. You can actually read stuff for ages on a screen so small, though my wife would say this is A Bad Thing.

You can't see any pixels without a loupe, it's amazing.

Tried it and left it. I wouldn't go back to such a tiny screen.

A few people at work have those enormous samsung note things. It's hilarious. Watching someone make a call on something almost the size of a paperback and then wedging it into a pocket makes me think of Dom Joly. Decent camera though!

Ah, I see. That's because you're wrong.

Yeah. I rejected teh new HTC one X as it was way too big for a phone.

Nope, I think you will find you may be in error.

This could go on, but I'm sure you know that it's you who is wrong.

Apologies for my tone, wasn't intended as such.

But I really fail to see where the fun is in squinting at a tiny screen, with tiny pixels. Tiny screens with bigger pixels are still not great. I feel pretty strongly about it. I preferred my old dumbphone where the numbers and text on it were a reasonable size in relation to the device. The reason I got my phone, was for the note taking ability which means I can journal, do shopping and tons of other things without having to type on a "keyboard" the size of an ant. I used to carry a notepad, now I don't. Happy days.
