I don't think there was anything wrong with your tone, I was on at bobbdobbs!

The whole retina thing for me is that you can have a tiny screen and use it which is why I think it's so great.

Apologies for my tone, wasn't intended as such.

But I really fail to see where the fun is in squinting at a tiny screen, with tiny pixels..
The retina display is more about pixel density, not super high resolutions.

I've never seen a kindle, nor know anything about its tech specs, but I wouldn't mind betting much of it's success is down to the resolution of its screen.

If you could get iPhone hardware with Android OS rather than iOS, then you'd have a near perfect phone.

I have absolutely no idea what on earth you're all talking about!

So is the consensus it'd be best (ie years of use without upgrading) to get a 4? & not even consider 2nd hand?

Given that a new 4 is 500 notes, this seems a ludicrous amount of dosh for a phone that takes pics, sends emails and infrequently talks to the odd bod occasionally

(utterly baffled noob  )

Erm...

... why not get them to buy something you really do want and buy yourself a cheaper phone instead? ;)

You can get plenty of good smart phones for a lot less than the iPhone.
I'd never buy a second hand phone. In my experience they seem to develop some sort of fault after 2-3 years. So a 2nd hand one would be close to that.

This is a GREAT call.

No phone, i or otherwise, is likely to give you years of trouble free use these days.

And for your needs there are far easier and cheaper phones than an iPhone 4 (or any iPhone, for that matter).
