Considering a Kindle Fire HD, will probably get one if it supports Netflix streaming. However, I expect Amazon will lock you into LoveFilm, so I'll think about a Nexus 7 instead.

Surely if it's Android as the OS, you'll just be able to get and install Netflix from Google's app store?

No, because Google apps. aren't (officially) available on the Kindle Fire - so no maps, Gmail, Currents, Play Store etc.

You're locked into Amazon's app. store.

I'm sure there must be a way round that.

Indeed there is, but it involves rooting your device and installing the Google libraries yourself, which is hardly an ideal solution.

Amazon has officially announced today that the Amazon Kindle Fire HD series of tablets will available in the UK starting October 25th.The new models will be available at bookstore chain Waterstones and will cost £129 for the improved first generation Kindle Fire, £159 for the Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HD 7in 32GB for £199. Right now there is no availability for the 8 inch version with LTE/4G internet access. The Kindle Paperwhite will also be available for £74.50, and features a glowing display to allow customers to read in the dark.

I'd love for that to be correct, but since Amazon themselves only have the ridiculous 'updated current version' showing... Why the hell are they doing that?! :(

Almost certainly wouldn't work in the UK anyway.

Depends, it might eventually if it features the right frequency. I'm sure they wouldn't be stupid enough to advertise it as 4G in the UK if it wasn't compatible anyway, unlike another company I could mention...

There's no way if they are making a device down to price the way Amazon are and they're including extra hardware to support frequency bands that aren't usable today and won't be for a period of years and even then only in markets the device isn't being sold in.

By the time 4G gets off the ground in the UK we'll be at least one generation further on in tablet & eReader hardware. Building support into the current gen is throwing away money and Amazon certainly aren't in the habit of doing that.

'eventually' is way beyond the lifespan of current mobile device generations.

All probably true to my mind, but that makes the updated standard Kindle slightly more of an insult for European customers :(
