Well it aint the car - that's sat in the drive last couple of nights but smell still appears overnight in the garage.

Got plumber coming tomorrow to inspect the boiler (water one not the wife) to see if that could be the cause.

I'm assuming that she doesn't read these forums or, given the absence of any "lol" or smiley faces in your post, you actually do have a death wish.

Here are some suggestions, for future reference, of suitable characters to use when describing your wife as a boiler --> Lol  ;) :P :etc:

Well plumber came and had a "sniff" around the garage and he was also baffled so he is coming back tomorrow with a more experienced plumber.

His initial thoughts were drain - but had a look and they seem clear and working fine - he also thought might be bacteria build-up in water outlet from washing machine as that goes into the garage but we'll see what this other plumber thinks tomorrow so another day with a peg on my nose

Got the works plumber to come and take a look for a 2nd opinion and he found the problem very quickly - a busted drain where the previous owner had bodged a job instead of doing it properly! The white pipe on the right should go in to the left bit but you can see the previous owner has just smashed thru the right hand bit which connects directly to the sewer - hence the smell!

Picture is Image

Now we are struggling to find a replacement - the right hand part is supposed to pull out but is stuck so gonna need a little bit of force to get it out.

Anyone know what this might be called? I suspect something like "Trapped Gully" but doing a google finds nothing quite the same.

Unfortunately the picture doesn't show it in a plain enough way for Google to recognise it; too much clutter and it's buried. Best suggestion it comes back with is this:
