We considered it, but there are too many people we want to have there. I'm not going to be driven to elope because of one silly bint, if she doesn't come because her kids aren't invited then it's no real loss.

There is now another person in the company with the same name as me, and people keep sending him emails intended for me; despite the fact that his email address includes his middle initial. It's frikkin annoying.

I can't find out how common my name is in the UK, but in the US it's about one in 800,000 people. In my company, it's one in 2,500.

I thought my name was pretty darned uncommon, but working in Avaya there was chap in America with the same.

When I did our wedding, I included in the invitation a letter to the recipient explaining what we were doing and why. Where appropriate, I said why certain people wouldn't be there and why certain other people would. I also very clearly stated that, after much hard thought and sadness, we hadn't invited a lot of people that we would have liked to be there, and that someone not being invited was not a mark of their not being important to us.

I also said that I had been to many weddings and had been embarrassed that I had been unable to afford both to attend the wedding and purchase a gift. I wrote something like, "We are, of course, more than happy to receive anything you may wish to give us. However we have invited you because we would like to share our day with you and, in the case of a choice, would much rather have you there than receive a gift.

The big trick, however, was to have a Jacob's Join for a reception. This was very effective at getting rid of the half-arsed trouble-makers. It was also gloriously cheap and took the pressure off everyone.

at 4am this morning, after 7 hours sleep. I woke up feeling like I'd taken the drug off Limitless, everything seemed clear to me.

at noon, my body decided it was night time and that now I really, really needed to go to sleep. After 5 hours of sleep I feel like [LIFTED] now.

The plaw in that flan is that we aren't doing invitations I've created an event on facebook for all our friends and family who are on there, I've called everyone else except Red's Dad and Thoo, who I sent a home-made invitation to, in really horrific colours (it's a bad-taste themed wedding) just because I didn't want to talk to them.

I have a plan and I worked out my anger on the squash ball on Sunday night I'm going to wait until, ooh, Christmas probably and give her a call to tell her that after a lot of thought and RSVP's we're not extending the invitation to her kids, if that means they don't come then it's a shame, but so be it. I have a number of responses to any argument she brings up, but with any luck they actually won't come and then I won't have to care, also it means we retain the moral high-ground because at least we went to their wedding (even though we hated every minute) and they treated us and Red's sister atrociously, so we automatically win any argument in future where they try to play the "family is important" passive aggressive card!

Our wedding, sadly, broken into two days. The day itself was what we had planned and paid for - immediate family and a couple of friends. Small, quiet, informal and the weather held out. It went well.

However, the in-laws decided that their extended family had to be catered for too. That's a lot of people, so the Sunday was spent in a hotel function room full of people who I rarely see. Now, there a a couple of things to bear in mind here:
Firstly, I am crap in big gatherings of people. I get very nervous and I end up not being able to function properly. This has always been the way, and usually I can sink into the background. this time, I'm centre of attention. So lots of people, screaming children and nowhere really to go for a few minutes to myself. My defences started crumbling at about 3:30 and it was a real struggle to keep going.

Secondly, my complete family can be counted on six fingers. All of them. So they were outnumbered by 6:1, and I was very aware of the imbalance.

Neither of us wanted this second event - it was wished on us. Thankfully it wasn't anything formal, just an "afternoon tea" but really, don't ever, ever stick me in a room full of people and expect me to function normally.

See, I'm not down with that, Red is a similar type of person, he's not good in large groups and he's not good at being the centre of attention. I am not putting up with anything that we don't want or aren't happy with, especially to "keep the peace" I'm not spending our wedding day worrying about pressure or irritation being put on us from our guests. Anyone who wants to press us into something we don't want, can jog on and will have me to deal with if they try to get feisty.

IMO, your wedding, your rules. If you don't want people there or extra events etc, then you should put your foot down on the matter.
We did. Put my dad right in his place when he started asking for a load of his friends to be invited.
