We pay between 50€ and 100€ a corner for our winter tyres (1L Micra, 1,4L Megane Estate and 2.2L Versa (17" 215/50R91W).

The ones for the Verso have to be sports rated.

But you have a market over there. Here it's ridiculous coz they mostly have to be imported. Mine are coming from Poland

If I was do it all again, I'd have a diesel Passat/A4 on 16" steelies and get some cheaper rubber (and spend a lot less money to drive around). But then I'd be wounded when I got to the Hochalpenstrasse and where's the fun in that! ;)

How badly worn are your summer tyres? And when are you travelling?

Could you change your tyres on your way through Germany (or other EU country) and dump the summer tyres and get a good bargain on winter tyres, then buy another set of summers, once you get back home?

My summers have 3mm left on the fronts and maybe 4.5 on the rear. Leaving December 29th. I don't have the confidence to pick up winters in Italy. Germany/Austria would be fine, but won't be getting there til after the season. Already ordered now.

My only concern is once things warm up in the bottom of the Fatherland I may wanna travel about a bit and that's gonna ideally require a switch, but I'll then have to keep my winters with me, which is gonna be major aggro. Maybe a roofbox?

They wear quicker than summer tyres in warm weather. That said, I went from Munich to Southampton in March with winter tyres on my old Mondeo and that was no problem. Temperatures were between 5°C and 12°C on the trip and there was no excessive wear (180km/h on the autobahn on the way back with 12°C). That was on a set of Continetals.

Yeah, I know they wear quicker and that does concern me a little, coz I won't be heading back til at least mid-April. And I have to go via Denmark. So it's gonna be a 3200km trip home - minimum. Plus, if I manage to find some more work on the continent it would be nice to switch back to summers and make the most of my time over there.

As long as you don't do excessive speeds in temperatures over 15°C, you shouldn't have any real problems.

Define excessive.

Just remember while they offer more storage space, they cut down on your mpg and their load limit is less that you'd imagine.

Yeah, was looking at a ski rack, coz they look cool and won't obscure my sunroof! 8-)

But they're money, and I've spent enough for the minute. Will have to consider alternatives.

Thing is Dave, when I was last in Germany there were long sections were anything less than 150/160kph was verging on getting us killed. You people drive crazy fast! And I very much doubt it'll be below 15 by late April in the South. It was 20 most days in Italy by late March last year...

I fully appreciate that but as a one off solution to get the winter tyres back home? That said if the customs pull him over would he need to worry about declaring them?
