I think he's totally missed the point of the metro screen (on a full PC) if you want to do work stuff, play a game (such as BF3 or whatever), write an article etc. nothing is stopping you. a simple click on the desktop tile and poof you are in an environment that is basically indistinguishable from a W7 environment. This says more about him, if they had given him loads of freebies im betting he would be saying that MS were trying to bribe him. actually never, For me the price point is over £5 (and it better have good reviews if I'm going to spend that on an app, although I will quite happily pay £30-£50 for a full game  ), under that and i'll give it a go. edit: Its sounding like im a rabid MS fanboy   _________________Finally joined Flickr

Indeed you can, but it's both a pain to do it and the app. that's supposed to replace it is massively inferior.

I put my PC into stand-by, after an hour or so, it automatically hibernates. Starting it back up again and within 1 second (stand-by) or about 8 seconds (hibernate), I am back at the desktop (excluding the time it takes to enter my password).
If I was on the desktop when I left the computer, I am on the desktop when I get back.
So far, I find it better than Windows 7 and the IFKAM start screen is much better than the start menu and offers more functionality. That said, my main applications are, as in Windows 7, pinned to the taskbar, so I probably need to go into the start menu on Windows 7 once a day, at most and the same should be true for Windows 8 - although I am experimenting a bit at the moment, so it is a little more often.
Also, most times I go to the Start Menu in W7, I hit the Windows key and start typing the name of the application I want to find, the same works in W8.
Multi-monitor support is also much better than under W7.
The Bing News app is actually very good. Nicely laid out and scales well on my notebook (15.6" 1920x1080 display).
So far, all of my hardware seems to work. I only needed 2 third party drivers, one for my memory card reader (from Sony); Windows informed me that it had found the device and actually sent me straight to the download link on the Sony website. The other was for my network scanner.

It must be just me but the last Windows UI that I thought really worked well was XP. Ok it had some issues in terms of ease of doing some tasks but they didn't have to c*ck up everything else in an attempt to fix it.
Windows Vista, 7 and 8 have all been worse that their predecessors IMO.

Windows XP was loathed, when it came out. It took nearly 2 years, before sales started to take off... And it was XP that drove me to Linux, I came back to using Windows regularly with Vista, it was way better - they seemed to have learnt a lot of lessons from Linux and OS X over time and Vista was much more usable.

a pain? press window key start to type default (default programs shows up as second choice after typing de YMMV) click on that choose windows photo viewer as default for photos forget and enjoy A once only action _________________Finally joined Flickr

When I opened a photo, I just selected Windows Photo Viewer and said it should be the default.

I find 7 to be the best yet but in terms of the 'average user experience', if there is such a thing, it's basically a skinned XP to my mind  _________________Plain English advice on everything money, purchase and service related:

Upgrading to Windows 8 has saved me around 40GB of disk space over Windows 7.

Out of curiosity is that an actual saving or would you have acheived something similar if you'd done a clean install of 7? I tend to find that if I do a clean install I'm a lot more picky about the applications and add ons that get installed again afterwards so tend to end up with a much more compact system than was previously the case (at least initially).

That's what I was doing before, you have to do it for each and every file type which is...cumbersome. It would be easier if you could: 1) Get windows 8 to boot straight to the desktop 2) Tell it to ignore the Metro apps. completely
