Edd and I are struggling to sort our dvd collection. At first it was sorted by genre, but too much overlap. Then we sorted it by media (movie/TV) but that was defeated by Boosh and Firefly.
so what to do?

So put Serenity at the end of Firefly. Even I wouldn't find that difficult. (8+p

[LIFTED], wasn't aware there was a rule that Firefly and Serenity had to go in the same section!
*Goes off to reorder DVDs*

It doesn't, but it's clearly causing an issue here for the OP. Mark

Organised chaos in my case. ie A mixture of sytems. All my box sets are grouped together, regardless of genre. All the rest of my anime is grouped together. The children's DVD's are together. Stand up comendy is together. The wife's crap is together. Everything else seems to be randomly filling the shelves.

Same here, but I use Delicious Library to keep track of them all. Barcodes make it so much easier.

As I own a maximum of about 30 films on DVD, most of these pass me by. It's roughly 50% music DVDs as well so there's a fairly logical split.

I generally keep mine together in groups so boxsets together, bluray together and dvd together. In those groups, it's alphabetical. Or at least it was - since coming home, they've been seperated and stacked in various places - I have some at home and some in storage.

Rip them all, stuff the physical disks in a box, then have a script that trawles the internet and then symlink the media into media, actors, genre, alphabetically. I'm mostly there, my main issue is where is best to get the data from, LoveFilm is good, but last time I checked their API cost money to use

Currently sorted by spine colour. It looks awesome, but we'll have to see how practical it is. I'm thinking of using a RaspPi to provide a lookup mechanism. (Apologies for shoddy image. And yes, Doctor Who 3rd season has now been moved.)
