I've a feeling Amazon have some APIs that certainly were available in the past. To lookup IMDB info, there's OMDBAPI

Pie, since mine are in actually no order at all. I have two relatively short (i.e. about 3 foot) shelves in my living room and all my current DVDs/BluRays go on those shelves. Any that don't fit (and according to delicious library I own quite a few) get put in storage boxes in a different room. if I buy a new DVD, one of the old ones has to move from shelves to storage.

It keeps the collection fresh and means there are no DVDs hanging around taking up shelf space I'm never going to watch again anyway. Plus it means I can pretty much look at the shelves and pick out any particular one straight away, so ordering is unnecessary.

I went with pie because that is the closest to my preferred method - aka the pile, or perhaps heap.

for music: alphabetically by artist, then chronologically

for film: whichever order they go into the DVD rack

Very useful! My main issue with IMDB is that if you search for "Harry Potter 3", it doesn't give you "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", which can be a bummer when I've named movies as such to order them sequentially on the file system.

+1, but do what I say, not what I do. Mine are actually completely randomly stored in boxes in the back bedroom.

As I have thousands of CD's I also presort by genre, ie singles, compilations, classical, comedy, music and then by artist and then chronologically.

I have 3 women in the house. I have given up trying to use any sort of order!

My library (books) is Alphabetically although hardbacks are all in one section as they need a bigger gap between the shelves and I cant afford to loose that level of space to have all the shelves that far apart

My relatively small music collection is essentially sorted alphabetically by artist then chronologically (well, in the order I bought them).

As for DVD/Blu Ray, I tend to try and keep box sets of the same thing together but after that it all gets a bit random.

Actually someone once commented on my system and said that having amnesia makes it sensible other wise it is borderline OCD for a norm.

Or C.D.O as it should be written if we're sorting it alphabetically, as it should be
