Just in my new flat and got one of these bit not sure what its for?

Any ideas!

Is there another, along with a satellite socket, close to the phone master socket? ..and an adjacent power socket.

Actually, I'd have thought most likely it's for a wall-mounted TV and there's another socket somewhere near where a stack of home cinema kit once lived. Have a look for somewhere with a lot of power plugs...

Not really, a bog standard freesat box or htpc with a DVB-S/S2 card should do the job for the satellite connection

Could make a good one with a dvb-s/s2 card AND a dvb-t/t2 card to max out channels and record 2 things while watching a third

Multi channel recording/watching from a dish is a bit of a pain, you need multiple cards and a multi-lnb which would probably require routing more cable (I don't trust the splitter/repeater faking boxes you can get)

He might not have adirect cable to the dish if he's in a flat in a shared property and they certainly wouldn't want him faffing with the LNB. The 'return' is a little odd, suggests it's not a standard install. Possibly there's a splitter unit feeding a single sat feed to all the flats in the property.

TBH, your best bet is indeed to get a decent Freeview HD dvr. Most functionality for minimum hassle, unless you actually desperately want Sky.

FreeSat is wheat we have and we really couldn't fault it.

The block of flats that I am in has a satellite connection so I might get a Free Sat box. Any recommendations?

Is it substantially better than Freeview?

The number and variety of channels is pretty much the same but IIRC some channels get more bandwidth so the 'transmission quality' is better. This is particularly true of the HD channels.

Freeview and Freesat have the major channels in common, but there the similarity ends.

Dave, Quest, and Yesterday are not on Freesat, and equally the CBS range and some of the +1 channels are not on Freeview.

(We have both here, and tend to watch the Freesat box more often.)

So what does the hdmi wall so met actually do? At the moment I have a freeview box that plugs into my tv with hdmi. But the box requires a remote to change channel etc...

If I stick the box in a different room and use the wall socket then I'm stuck watching one channel.

Thank's for that. I was debating getting a Freesat box. My TV already has Freeview HD built in. Plus having a big aerial on the roof means that I get loads of channels. Before I moved from the last place, it was only 500m away but I only got three channels on terrestrial analogue, and nothing on freeview literally until a couple of weeks before I moved. Now get some 120 channels. Looking through the listings on the TVGuide app showing some of the additional +1 channels has made me think of using Free sat instead.

Can you give us a bit of context e.g. where the sockets are in your house etc?

I'm supposed to place my TV "box" in the cupboard and connect it to the stuff in there. Then plug the HDMI from the box into the wall.

Then I plug the HDMI from the wall in the lounge into my TV.

To change channel I need an IR receiver thingy to then go back into the wall and some how into the cupboard so that I can change channel.
