Yes, definitely better with gas.

Everything is better when cooked on gas!

I just filter mine. I have a Philips coffee maker with an insulated jug so no need to stew the coffee afterwards. Though I am going to experiment with grinding my own beans at some point.

I have an Italian cafatiere, like the Moka Pot, but a bit taller.

The best beans (normal) are Jamaica Blue Mountain, but they are EXPENSIVE!

Kopi Luvak is supposed to be the best, but the beans are eaten by the Palm Civet and excreted out the other end, before they are roasted! :?

The cafatiere works fine on electric (never had gas), although being aluminium, it doesn't work on an induction hob.

One thing about coffee type, when I was visiting friends in Italy, I brought back a load of coffee, the first question was, what was my water like? This dictates which coffee, especially blended, tastes best. They had soft water and I had hard, so we bought coffee for hard water, it tasted like gnats piss in Italy, but they assured me it would be good, when I got home. And it did. It tasted superb!

At the end of the day, go to a decent coffee emporium and try different bean types, until you find the one(s) you like best. I used to buy pre-ground, but I'd get through the 250g relatively quickly.

Also, keep the ground coffee in the fridge, in a sealed container.

Also, if you want to get rid of smells in your fridge, put a small amount of coffee in an open bowl in the fridge.

For every-day, however, I use Dallmayr Prodomo coffee through a high end filter machine, it tastes better than the average beans that most people throw in their coffee machines.

My neighbour, when I was in Bavaria, used to grow coffee beans at work, in the greenhouses (research lab) and we'd roast them over an open fire in the garden, before grinding them and brewing them. A great experience, but the yield was low and it is a lot of work for every day.

All good advice. I have one of those scoops with clip on to the bag to seal it.

Though usually get medium roast ready ground Fairtrade coffee from the Co-op which is pretty good.

if you ever in London, you could try get some beans from Monmouth coffee.
otherwise, there's an old man in Camden that still hand roasts his coffee and it's really good.
Current coffee we have is from a little roaster in North North London

The Monmouth Street branch looks most accessible for me. I will have to make a note to go there.

Go look HERE... OCD taken to a completely new level but my advice is to check out the different methods of making coffee - you don't have to have expensive machinery and a degree in Chemistry/Alchemy/The Arts...

Good coffee?

Quote:
I don't need you to tell me how good my coffee is. I'm the one who buys it, I know how f***in' good it is. When Bonnie goes shoppin;, she buys sh!t. I buy the gourmet expensive stuff 'cause when I drink it, I wanna taste it. But what's on my mind at this moment isn't the coffee in my kitchen, it's the dead ****** in my garage.

He knows. ;)

Unfortunately I don't have time to brew the perfect cup. At home I've got some Alta Rica and at work I've got some Millicano.

While it is interesting. I do find that some people can become coffee snobs or bores. My palate is not so sensitive to discern between them so I stick to middle of the range fair trade coffee.

I'm biased as the company I work for is the UK distributor for Illy Coffee :P

Coffee can easily taste burnt if the grinder is set wrong - too fine and is tastes meh.

We don't buy from the coffee market but directly from the farmers themselves - much better than "fair trade" which, if you look closely, does not seem very "fair" at all.

At home though I use Kenco.

IMO. I've no idea how it manages that.
A mate of mine swears by freezing the beans to keep them fresh.

+1 - a dedicated tea drinker

Same here. Though I've not got anything on my father-in-law. I'm sure he keeps Yorkshire Tea in profit all by himself.
