Network printers disappearing

Certainly all of the clinical computers (ie used by doctors and nurses) have a printer directly attached either lpt1 (for label printer) or usb (for prescriptions and letters). The remaining computers either have a directly attached printer, or if not, are attached to a printer on the network.
In XP, I can add this by going Control Panel -> Printers and Faxes -> Add New Printer and get it to search the local network for printers. I can then select and add the one I want and it all works fine. This is great for all the computers without a directly attached printer but for one computer, it seems to "lose" the printer. This can happen after a reboot though not sure if it happens with a log in/out.
Any way of tracking down what's happening?

Flakey problem with that machines print spooler service?
Tried installing a different print driver on that machine as could be a corrupt print driver on the local machine.

Have tried it before a few months back but it wasn't playing up then. Computer is fine as long as it remains on.
