Andrew Orlowski I sitting this one out for a while and, to be honest, I can't really see a fault with his analysis.

I read somewhere that existing mobile internet was also getting faster because the networks were starting to run Fibre To Mast.

So with the rollout of 4G, will 3G actually get a little faster?

yes, because the pipes later on are getting fatter. They're also moving to a later 3G system which is faster than the original implementation. The analogue TV switch off might also help but I might be mixing my 3G and 4G up with that.

I know Vodafone are 'bigging up' 800mhz 4G as it will give a better reception in buildings. That suits me. I spend a lot of time in airports where the signal is currently crap and the wifi is way too expensive to even consider using.

It is a joke. I have unlimited with my Three plan. All for £40 a month. Though I have since seen that Three has increased its prices on the One Plan to £44 a month.

HSPA+ is plenty enough to stream music or HD video (well, 720P at least). You just don't get that because their networks are massively over-contended. Right now, EE isn't. It will be. Then you'll be paying £20 a month more than a 3G contract for a difference you can't even see.

I did a speed test last week to demonstrate the speed to an acquaintance and got nearly 20Mbps down and 4 Mbps up on 3G so 4G looks expensive for me.

That's a massive understatement. On O2 3G today I got 0.4mbps download on average, my max was 0.8 all day! On Vodafone I got 2.5mbps download.

I'm on Tesco (essentially O2) and I haven't done a speed test, but it's certainly been fine for vids etc. The girl across from me in work on O2 can't even use Facebook
