Britain's Christmas tree plantations hit by mysterious killer fungus

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/topics/christmas/christmas-news/9686363/Britains-Christmas-tree-plantations-hit-by-mysterious-killer-fungus.html

Quote:
The mysterious disease, called current season double needle necrosis (CSNN), turns needles brown during the summer before they drop off.
It is thought the disease was imported from the Caucasus in the seeds of Nordmann firs, the species that accounts for four in five Christmas trees sold in Britain.
While relatively few trees have been hit this year, there has been a reported surge in cases since 2009 with no fungicide yet found to halt it.
More than 150 growers across the country have been affected with the majority reporting damage to up to three per cent of their stock.
But some have reported more than 15 per cent of their crops have been damaged, with one farmer experiencing a third of his crop being killed. Many have lost tens of thousands of pounds in lost trees.

I prefer Norwegean Spruce to Normann Fir anyway. Not that we're buying a real tree this yeas as we're away for Christmas. We normally do though.

Our fake tree has lasted over a decade. I really feel it may be time to retire it and get another one.

I don't really want a real tree. I feel the annual deforestation for Christmas is wasteful.

Because annual deforestation in general is okay?

Although most trees are from sustainably managed plantations, I imagine the ecosystem in a forest of nothing but young Christmas trees is pretty naff.

I have a fake tree, as did my parents when I was little. I think I prefer them.

I didn't bother getting it out last year though, and possibly the year before... and maybe before that I can't remember. I bought it when there was a Mrs W009 more into such things. Well mostly she was into chocolate, but shiny baubles pleased her too.

What on earth is going on with trees and fungus this year? Ash trees and now fir trees.

International trading and monocultures are not a good combination.

Yes I will get one, oops already have one. I will be putting it up early and because it does not shed I can leave it for the whole period without problems.

We bought one with a root ball last year, planted it in a massive pot and had it indoors for the holidays. We took it outside after Christmas and it's done very well, growing loads over the year, I'm looking forward to bringing it back indoors this year and decorating it again :) My family have had the same live Xmas tree year after year for almost the whole of my life!
