Ohh, that's perfect timing! Downloaded and registered it, thanks for sharing!

I've been using Handbrake for the last few months to rip my entire DVD collection so I can put them all on my AppleTV (1st Gen) and get rid of the discs. The vast majority have converted fine, but I've got one or two stubborn discs (Terminator Salvation, Senna and all 3 series of The Inbetweeners) that either don't convert or have problems. The Terminator Salvation DVD just produces 16Kb files that seem to be one black frame.

I'm hoping this MacX DVD Ripper Pro will do the job on these last few discs

EDIT: So far, so good... it's half way through Terminator Salvation and the file is currently 800Mb+ so the signs are promising!! Cheers, I'm a happy bunny. :P

Well, Terminator Salvation has completed, and it's not bad quality but need to have a fiddle with the settings a little bit. The end result was a 1.5Gb MPEG 4 file, which is about the same as Handbrake creates for a 2 hour film.

First attempt I just picked one of the output presets, second attempt I clicked the "Use High Quality Engine" checkbox and it was noticeably better quality, so I'd recommend ticking that and having a look at the advanced options behind the little "cogs" icon.

Some omissions I've discovered (which Handbrake offers) are that it doesn't seem to have support for creating chapters in the final video file or automatically cropping out the letterbox top and bottom if the aspect ratio is narrower than 16:9. There is a manual cropping option if you click Edit, but it's a tiny preview so it's very hard to see if you're being accurate. However, it ripped this problem disc, which is more than Handbrake could do.

And for free, I'm certainly not complaining! Great find. :P

I think that you need to retain the discs if you are to stay legal. Still a grey areas but much less so than if you got rid of the discs.

Well he could store them somewhere like the loft. You don't have to get the disc to watch the film or programme.

MacX DVD Ripper seems slower than Handbrake. It was taking over an hour to rip a 30 minute programme from a DVD. Even tough it says it's going to use all 8 threads (the Mac mini has 4 cores, each capable of running 2 threads), Activity Monitor says it's only using one. handbrake maxes the machine out with all 8 showing around 100% use.

Exactly they do not have to be installed. I have kept all my CD's even though I have ripped them all to the hard drive. Plus I can re-rip if there is a problem.
