So no change then? It will be faster than most computers could handle through the ethernet ports right now. I have gigabit ethernet but that is a fraction of what this offers. Though what will they do when many customers have even faster connections than they do now?

I don't suppose they've upgraded the back-bone at the Truro exchange, so it would still be contended if they rolled it out to home users... none of whom have FTTP anyway. It's great news anyway. Shows the existing fibre is up to the job for the next few years. It's just... everything else that isn't

I do think that FTTC should be mandatory, then FTTP can be a paid extra, which will probably appeal to businesses only. They should start with making every exchange linked to the fibre backbone. Do it in stages.

If the UK's going to remain competitive in terms of quality and speed of broadband then FTTH is all but unavoidable. I think I read somewhere once that BT are rolling out FTTH to new builds, don't hold me to that though.

Yes for new builds and all new installations. If more homes had fibre they can compete better with Vermin.

Why does Cornwall bloody get everything? Is it because that's where everybody who is in charge has their holiday homes?

Cornwall is swimming in EU Objective One funding (now known as the Convergence fund) because it's one of the most economically depressed areas in the country (along with Wales). This trial is a complete farce, it's proof of concept more than anything and BT openly admits the speeds rolled out to homes and businesses won't be anywhere near the same. To even get this trial operational they had to install specialist equipment, PC Pro covered it extensively in one of their recent podcasts.

So what if a business wants such speeds now, and is willing to pay for the equipment to be installed? In the end it will be down to price of installation and connection that will be crucial to it being a success.

I love a fibre connection. But BT have no plans to upgrade the local exchange (which is at the end of my garden). I'll have to stick with 20Mb for now.

I don't see Cornwall as being any worse than Dorset. Shame we have part of Hampshire attached to us that skews any figures upwards.

I used to have a 20 Mbps connection but where I am now it is down to 12-13 Mbps which is good enough for me. Fibre would be nice but not at the price that they want for it.

By the time they upgrade where I am the price will have dropped anyway.

Yes by that time I will take it up. Just not at the current prices. Fibre should also be cheaper to run and maintain.
