Now that is good.

Thank you!

I think I'm going to apply for one of those 3V cards - if I do it carefully, it won't be much more expensive than a postal order.

Thus, I should be able to signup in a few days.

Thanks again! :D

I must thank you, Chip, for starting this thread, just last week I was thinking about web hosting as my uni site will go offline in a years time when I graduate...

Dreamhost looks good, the one Edd pointed to is a fair bit cheaper, but from the look of it, Dreamhost offer full shell access, I presume this is through SSH?

There must be millions of ex-Geocities users looking for hosting. I wonder how many Dreamhost snapped up; over 1000 clearly!

If you're on a budget, there are some pretty good free hosts. You'll need to buy a domain still, but you can get that from 1&1 for less than £6 for 2 years.

I use http://www.000webhost.com/

Sorry to hear you missed out Chip. I didn't realise it was a limited offer - I thought it was open to all their (ex) users.

I really would recommend DreamHost though. I did have some downtime - about 5 hours. I only knew about it because they e-mailed me to say sorry though, and apparently it was because they were upgrading the server and something went tits-up.

Please, please, please stay away from 1and1 though - had a bad experience with them. Retards they are, complete monkeys.

If you have a few sites, it's worth looking at a reseller account. I've got a reseller account with www.heartinternet.co.uk which doesn't work out too expensive. It could be real money spinner if I actually resold, but I lack the confidence to support it if anything went wrong.

A reseller account is brilliant if you are making sites for clients who want some control. You can give them a control panel to configure their e-mail for example, but if you are just making sites for customers who really don't care about the technical bit and just want their site and a few email address to 'just work' then it's quite an expensive way to do it, and one account with multiple domains would be far cheaper.

It's swings and roundabouts I suppose.

I find the support to be really good and very quick response. I have a reseller package and had had no complaints. Yes it is very good value for money and sometime you do get what you pay for, but I can live with occasional downtime for the value of the reseller package. Overall, excellent vlaue for money.

Dreadful company. My advice is to avoid these people completely. I have been unfortunate enough to have had to deal with their customer service department. Not a pleasant experience.

Interesting stuff. I know what he means about the service side. They were fine with me, but I detected a sort of an 'unprofessional' attitude and that they might turn a bit if you asked them the wrong question.

Haven't had any problems with uptime. But they are as you say, cheap.

My 3V card came today, so I'll be loading some money on tomorrow and probably registering with Dreamhost shortly after. :D

I know what you mean about not wanting the headache of technical support with the reseller accounts, Tom...have you considered selling a couple to family and friends? That way they know you'll do your best, but cut you slack if things are beyond your control...

Thanks, everyone!

Yeah, I do offer free hosting for family with the caveat that there's little support!

$9.24 (yes dollars, about five quid?) for the first year with a free hostname for the life of your account with Dreamhost, if it helps...They say it'll end today, but it'll probably still be on for a while...
