Look at emergency tax as a way of saving. You will get it all back by the end of the tax year. It usually only takes a few months before they resolve it. Worst case scenario it will be resolved next tax year but at least you will start the new tax year without being on emergency tax. Good luck.

Flat below you connected only by stairs, notice given, quiet, tidy, separate bathrooms, friendly, no where else to stay, only opportunity to visit in 12 months, pays extra rent, buys alcohol to share. Such house mates are what dreams are made of, but it appears some people are determined to let life piss them off no matter what.

Hello! It's been far too long since I frequented these parts! Good to see the egg that rocks again. Yup, there is that, but given that this paycheque is meant to sort Christmas and cover the car's arse, it's somewhat left me a tad stuffed! I'll get it back, but it's a little late in the day by the time it comes round! That said, if I don't crash into a tree going to work, and don't get ripped in two by my other half's folks for still using the Landy as a daily driver, April will be rather sweet! (If the rebate comes through on time...) Sounds like some professional asshattery, if you want my thoroughly unprofessional opinion. Bad luck, man.

It can take several months to come through, but once you have been notified of your correct tax code it will either be applied at the next pay day, or if after the start of the next tax year you should get a cheque. Unless you have any reasons for a more complicated tax code like deductibles it is usually a couple of months.

I got a rather nice cheque from HMRC a month or so back sorting out 3 of the last 4 years. It got me a shiny new laptop and covered a month's rent => No more student-y debts and now I can actually start trying to skimp and save...

If you live like you are on emergency tax then save the difference each month it would add up.

I was being taxed as if I would earn more than the tax-free allowance in any one year (which I don't think I did at that point), but because I was (sequentially) working for companies who used 5 different tax offices during the four years things kept getting muddled. I'd earn some back each April/May, and then I seem to have gotten more that I'd forgotten about now everything's nice and stable and simple.

Aye, I'm expecting to pay off a nice portion of a few debts when it comes through. Only problem is that I seriously need that money in my pocket now! In other news: Windy Wales means I'll be impressed if my door tops last the month! Oh, and there was a good 20 minutes between me walking in the door and tea being made which, personally, I consider an absolute travesty, given that nobody appeared to be working on a hot mug at the time. If the Zombie Apocalypse comes next month, I personally blame green tea and decaf for allowing the world to come to this sorry state.

It took HMRC a year and a half you give me back the tax I'd overpaid in the year I was made redundant, though they did it without prompting from me.

Why do some people lean right into your face to talk? It's not like it's a secret and they don't need glasses, so now I'm stuck with the smell of onions in my nostrils
