Both HSBC and RBS changed their policies in January 2011 so notes that failed to be collected were automatically refunded to an account.

Why wasn't this the default from day one?

When I left some money at a HSBC cash point, the ATM took back the money and I got a phone call from them asking about my transaction. Two days later my money was refunded.

That is acceptable, but it is the fact that they held on to the money for ages for many is so wrong.
