Happy bloody new year.
[1ifted][1ifted][1ifted] drunken [1ifted] morons with their [1ifted] [1ifted] fireworks!
I hate new year. Spent the whole evening with a dog that was flipping out because of the fireworks - as a puppy, somebody threw a banger over the fence and it exploded next to him. Now, he freaks out as soon as they start with fireworks. Unfortunately, instead of letting them off at midnight, they started mid afternoon. By midnight, he had been running round in frantic circles for nearly 12 hours.
We had to throw out the carpet in the lounge and spent the first our of the new year trying to calm the dog down, whilst at the same time trying to clean up the piss.
Tried to take the dog for a walk this afternoon, but the [1ifted] [1ifted] idiots hat started letting off fireworks again and the dog had a major panic attack and tried to attack me.
[1ifted] fireworks should be [1ifted] banned!

If fireworks were used year round, I might agree but it's not like you don't know when they're gonna be used: new years/bonfire night/diwali. Three nights out of 365.

knowing they will be used doesn't help. And with the idiots using them in the 3 oor 4 days running up to new year and after new year, that makes tbe situation worse.
We have tried tranquilizers for the dog, but they don't help. He is wobbly on his legs, but he is still scared and panics. The amount of stress that makes for us isn't good either. I need a weeks holiday after last night!

Not knowing a great deal about dogs, I have to ask the question: couldn't the dog be (slightly) sedated? Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2

See above, sedating the dog doesn't work. We'd need to give him a general anesthtic.
It wouldn't be so bad if the fireworks were limited to official displays, but every drunken idiot in tbe street seemed to have bought a couple of hundred euros worth of fireworks.

I agree about limiting sales of fireworks to say the day before an event which would limit people getting their hands on them.

It sounds like he needs therapy.

Diwali is a 5 day festival, and from what I recall of living in London in the 90s, is actually a month long affair. Bonfire night, one night, easily celebrated for a week either side. Fireworks are on sale in New Zealand from the 2nd to the 5th November. Anyway, that doesn't stop them being hoarded and stockpiled to be let off for birthdays and everything else from then up to New Years. However one thing I'm sure that doesn't help is that continental fireworks actually go BANG!

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

The other thing is, yes, we know which days (times of year, as others have said, it extends several days either side of the actual event, and even though sales are restricted in Germany to a couple of days before the event, as Matt said, people stockpile them for other occasions), but what do you do? We gave the dog tranquilizers, we closed the blinds and we turned up the TV, nothing helps when the neighbours spend several hours letting off bangers outside the house. Knowing it is coming, what is your suggestion, what should we do to make the ordeal stress free and peaceful for the dog and for us? I suppose that we could have rolled up the carpet before the fireworks started, then we would need to refurbish the lounge, but how does knowing in advance that there will be fireworks help the poor animals that are scared stupid by them? So scared that they won't go outside the house, but so scared that they lose control over their bladder?

Playing devils advocate, we could ban the ownership of dogs? While to some they are great companions, to others they are intimidating. In some cases they have taken lives and in others they have physically or mentally scared people. Many people are allergic to them.
Banning the ownership of dogs would mean that you would have had a stress free new year, perhaps even enjoying the fireworks...

YES! Definitely! Little sh*t machines. Banning the ownership of dogs would mean I don't have to act like I'm walking through a minefield on the way to work. There's nothing worse than seeing a big pile of crap left behind by an owner that doesn't give a sh*t. I've been at bmf before (exercise in the local park) and been doing sit ups and all I can smell is some unseen dogsh*t. Second to that it would stop any attacks by dogs to little kids. I haven't experienced this first hand but it seems to happen quite regularly in the news. Ban the ownership of dogs so that our new year celebrations aren't ruined by dog owners complaining about every fracking loud noise they happen to hear. On a side note, get your dog therapy. It's a shame and everything but there is something wrong with it. Surely you are in the wrong for allowing it to go untreated for so long?
